Hi I am being driven up the wall by the website and their insistence we join before we can book
I already registered as- non member and not being permitted to book online
Rang the Castleton site direct but no joy (answer phone)
Am I doing something wrong?
I'm not going to be bullied into joining!

According to the CC web site page about the site, it's members only.

I didn't think you could use them unless you're a member they have always asked us for our membership number when booking.

Some sites are Member only others are 'open' to general public.. depends on whether the site is owned or just managed by the CC.

As a CC member I don't see why Club owned sites should be open to non members

Ah ok
Fair enough.
People on here advised is not to join saying it wasn't worth it.
Is it worth ÂŁ45 to stay at Castleton for three nights before camp fees?

Definitely not.

It wouldn't be worth staying there if it was free.

EDIT: Castleton is worth visiting, just not that site.

Depends if you think you'll use their other member only sites. We have stayed as members purely for the New Forest, Black Knowl site. Don't think we will renew this time as there is another site that we use close by nowadays:)

Seriously thinking about renewing my CC membership later this year, Bolton Abbey and York (both of which we cancelled last month as we were ill) were around ÂŁ110 for 4 nights, Baltic Wharf where we did go last week, ÂŁ76 for 3 nights. We joined 4 years ago after a 15 year gap because they had sites in the places that mattered. After Baltic Wharf we were on a commercial site in Mortehoe, Easewell Farm, 7 nights for ÂŁ93 on a fully serviced pitch and that included an extra ÂŁ10 for the dog!

Ah poo....Baltic Wharf.....another reason to stay in the cc.....although we paid something silly just before christmas too:( was hoping we could join the MCC instead, didn't want to pay another membership. Already in both clubs & Britstops
You do get discounts with the cc - we've never used them though

We've always used a lot more CLs than we have sites themselves since we're self-sufficient in the main. If we had kiddies or even dogs or any special requirements (eg essential (for whatever reason) equipment that needed the mains) then obviously sites are usually a more reliable bet - but then there are a huge range of commercial sites that probably cater the same or better (more swimming pools for instance if you happen to need them) at about the same cost.

Depends entirely on what each person actually needs from a place to stay - and the same thing applies when it isn't a camping holiday of any kind - what we look for in accommodation will be different from someone else.

Nothing ever suits everybody!

Oooh - and we do use the M6 Toll road discount when we're in the Moho!

We keep wondering whether to cancel our CC membership but have decided to keep it again because of access to the CL network should we wish to use one.

We fell out with the CC (long story) so switched to "the friendly club" but still have the CC sites book. We never use either organisation's Club Sites as they are ridiculously expensive and motorhomers simply don't need most of the facilities which they provide but we do use CSs and CLs. We never book but phone when we are a few miles away to make sure there is room for us and not once have we been asked for a CC membership number. Why would a CL proprietor turn away a night's fee just because we aren't members? I'm sure it is a different story on the Club Sites where everything is regulated but we've found on our way round that our money is as good as the next man's. The CS proprietors are more inclined to ask for membership numbers so we've kept our subscription going - even with the annual fee, the CSs are still great value. Happy motorhoming.
