We used them last week for a blow out. No great issues if you know how to drive their system. In fact once pointed in the right direction they were very good .
Point
1 The telephonists are mechanically clueless so make sure you know what you want and need . We are 7.5 tonnes and need commercial not the normal man with van . If you are over 3.5 tonnes make sure this is stressed . After an hour of waiting the patrol man phones . We explain he says no can do you need commercial . Funny enough I had already told the telephonist that!!!
2 The RAC seem to have a policy of if we can't fix it we take you on . (which they where happy to do)
This is ok on light vehicles but motorhomes with large overhang just aren’t going up an normal tilt and slide. This means commercial lift which may be miles away.
at 30' and heavy with large rear overhang the only thing for us was a unit capable of shifting a bus. All this for a blow out.
3 Try your luck.
If what is on offer is not the most suitable for you or you can think of a better option suggest it !!.
We needed a tyre and a man to fit it .That was all . After a bit of persuasion with the commercial section they agreed it would be cheaper to find a tyre shop to do the job than call out a specialist tow but I would have to pay . Well I would have to pay for a tyre anyway and the call out fee would be worth getting back on the road that evening. .
A man was found a tyre was found ( not a common size) Job was done . Blow out 15:00 Saturday . Back on the road 20:00 .
Taking we were in the back end of nowhere in Scotland not to bad.
I have no doubt that if we had left it to the RAC they would have lifted us and got us to a place of repair where we would wait until they opened . After all that is what you pay for .
To have the recovery service on the end of the phone was a great relief . If you are capable and can direct them to a better option then everyone wins.
We now carry a spare tyre . Will still need the tyre boys to fit . Hay ho .

I carried a full spare in my 7500kg rv......and the means to fit it if neccessary but as I pay for arrivals its their job to change it, they charge enough for cover.

I have used the spare before, when the valve ripped out and I now have coming a NEW van with no spare only a pump and a tin of Gloop. There will be a tyre on a wheel in the garage asoon as I know the correct size and rating. NO WAY will I ever go without a spare on board regardless of the idea that they are not needed any more. The little valve ripped the tyre to bits when it went luckily it had twin wheels to allow me to keep going a bit to safety.

Yep, worse than useless.
The 'snot in a tin' might fix a puncture but you'll have a bloody long wait for it to fix a blowout.

I live in hope that firstly we never need them, but that if we do the combination of spare in garage and E + P jacks to lift the offending side might mean a 'normal' RAC man might change our wheel

had similar to your experience when towing a caravan many years ago, they changed the tyre on hard shoulder of M6 near Carlisle, much cheaper than pulling the whole outfit off the motorway the followed us to costa coffee place up road to take wheel off and balance, couldn't be done at side or motorway due to rocking with lorries passing

very happy with them and their no weight limit, but we have to rejoin through C + CC to get that weight extension
