Hi

We are thinking about having our Kon Tiki re mapped.

Looking forward to hearing your opinions and experiences. Have been told to expect a increase of BHP from 127 to 171.

What is the present mileage on the vehicle @Mark5204 ?
I would say do it ( having done it ! ) but there is a down side

yep same, do it!

search boosters, here and google, they specialise and have a 'motorhome map'

not sure about plug in boxes, they just confuse the injector signal, a remap removes the generic map and replace it,

ps they keep your old map

Beware excessive bhp gains ,+ 25% is generally considered as safe , & as importantly make sure your gearbox / drivetrain is rated to take the extra torque produced.

I wouldn't recommend a plug in box as most of them simply overfuel.

Had mine done 3 years now no problems so far. Much better to drive. But some have had transmission problems.

Yep - I would be wary on a 3 litre ducato as the clutch is (allegedly) a bit fragile but I have had all my vehicles remapped and declared to the insurers (motorhome insurance is only very rarely increased due to a remap). An easier drive all round

That is why I asked present mileage David..
If around the 30,000 mark be prepared to fit a new clutch in the near future..
Mine lasted for about 6 months before it let go.. That was on a 2.8 Ducato.. It does seem to be a very common issue

Thank you for all the replys. With have to give it more thought I think. Don't really want the expense of a new clutch.

Why were you thinking of a remap? Is it a bit sluggish on hills ? Mine is too but I think I'll just accept it.
I did wonder if the turbo was working at one time but apparently it common to this engine so now I don't worry about it.
Just have to be in the correct lane for hills to fit in with hgv's and not hold anyone up !

Hi Mark I asked the same question in another thread after a long think and weighing up all the replies I received, for and against and then driving the vehicle back from Wales after purchace I decided not to go with it as I'm not in that much of a hurry to get there and it seemed to drive OK without too many change downs when meeting a hill or an incline, and also there is not much proof out there it can help with fuel consumption, I think it's mostly about drivability rather than fuel economy but I might be wrong, and as my vehicle does roughly 24-25 to the gallon and thats before I load it up, I don't want it to get any worse.
Best Wishes Tony

Some vehicles for example the 2.8 are reputed to have clutches that are likely to throw in the towel. Some have no problems some do.

IMO Mileage is not entirely relevant. Its how the vehicle has been driven not how far. A good driver could get say 100.000 miles from a clutch and a bad driver could get as low as 20 or 30.000 miles or even less !

Im thinking about getting our late 2013 2.2 130 bhp Peugeot mapped but it seems quite a few of the later engines with Euro5 engines cannot be remapped.

Piggy back tuning boxes often contain little more than a few resistors which hold the boost on for longer. Severe damage can be done to not only the engine but the emissions equipment like the DPFs . Bugger one of those and the bill will be huge.

Best way to get a vehicle mapped is a "live" map which is done on a rolling road (Dynamometer). This ensures not only a map that gives good power and torque and where you want it but a Safe map which is vitally important.

A simple generic map is fine but to get the best get the vehicle live mapped. (y)(y)(y)

Am I correct in thinking this engine is in fact a Ford ' Duratorq ' engine ? . . as fitted to some MK3 Mondeos, Jaguars & Land Rovers etc ?

It is mate yes. Its the Ford Duratorq "Puma" engine. Its not the engine that dictates if or not it can be tuned its down to which ECU is fitted. I have yet to find out which ECU is on our van.

Thanks Charlie, it's a good, well proven engine - we have the same in our MH - detuned to 100bhp I think.

Thought about it a few tim es as had my car done three years ago and to date no problems and car was much improved on torque which was what I was wanted ...however I find my Peugeot 2.8 HDI responds really well to the top grade of shell v power .so to time being will put it out of mind ...Roy

I got my 50K 2.8jtd remapped and when heading to Spain I noticed clutch slip twice on the A1 on hills overtaking lorries at speed. Drove to Southern Spain without any further slipping (driving gently). Had it changed in January, mechanic said plate didn't look too worn and I saw it too. I do think it's a bit of a weak point on the Ducato, but I don't regret the remap. Just need a shorter 5th gear now.

Hi there could you please tell me how much a clutch costs and is to fit into your vehicle?

I think there's a problem with the release mechanism on the 2.8JTD. I did at one time (before looking more closely) think that there was a pedal assist spring or strut but that is not the case. So my experience so far (of only one vehicle fitted with the 2.8) is that occasional clutch slip does occur and when it does it can be stopped immediately by hooking a foot under the pedal and lifting it. The pedal doesn't move upwards by much (not at all according to the feel through my foot) but slip can be stopped every time using this method. The clutch passes every known test for slip as long as the pedal is lifted. Why haven't I sorted it? Well it's a Hymer with no offside door so pedal / master cylinder examination involves a headstand or similar in the drivers footwell and I need to pluck up courage slowly.

The point of this ramble is that it occurs to me that clutches might have failed or even been changed prior to failure if my problem is common to all 2.8JTD-engined vans. If I allowed the slip to continue and didn't lift the pedal it would see the clutch off in short order. Is this fault perhaps the reason for the 'weak clutch' reputation?

My friend the cost of clutch replacement depends on many things..

Firstly it a huge mistake to fit anything but top quality components. They should consist of all 3 basic parts being the driven plate the pressure plate and the thrust / release bearing. If there is a guide tube which there more usually is that should also be replaced.
Some vehicles have the slave cylinder ( Hydualic actuated clutches) inside the bell housing and it would be a false economy to not replace that part while the gearbox if off the engine.

I have always favoured LUK clutch parts. Fitted as OE to many decent manufacturers vehicles .

A big factor is the vehicle itself. How hard or easy the job is means many or few labour hours. Then it's down to costs not only in a particular area but also individual garages..

Hi, I was working for an auto parts seller when I purchased my parts so will be a little more than I paid. As @Charlie says don't go for cheap, I used a Valeo 3 piece clutch kit, I did buy a slave cylinder too but have since found out that wasn't needed (not inside the bell housing). £80 for clutch £70 for slave (sachs) £210 for fitting. I got the gearbox oil changed too while it was out.

The 2.8jtd doesn't have an internal slave.
Clutch kits: Sachs - Valeo - LUK. All good in my book. Sachs was the most and LUK the cheapest.

I remap for a living and have mapped both my MHs. Combined mileage of 25k. Never had a problem. If it's done properly you will be fine. My current van has the fiat Ducato 2.3 130bhp engine and I have to say it was very underpowered for the size and weight of the van. Drives completely different and a lot easier to drive now it's got more power.

Hi Tony from another Tony as you are an experienced mapper for want of a better word whats your take on fuel consumption on a vehicle after being mapped, not power, fuel consumption, better or worse or just the same?

Many Thanks Tony

My experience after having multiple vehicles both petrol and diesel mapped is gains in not only power and tourqe but MPG gains as well.

A point often missed though is a well mapped engine gives not only a stronger tourqe value but a flatter tourqe curve. This means more tourqe across the rev range which in turn makes for a far more pleasant driving experience. It is because of these gains the need to change down gears is reduced and the MPG gains come.

We for these vehicle we have mean we are looking for tourqe . Power or BHP gains are to a large extent irrelevant. This is why a Live map is far far better as the engineer can alter where in the Rev range the boost is made stronger . A generic map cannot and will not take in the specifics of the vehicle weight how it's geared and so on . When a vehicle is on the Dyno the engineer can see all this and take it all into consideration when setting the parameters.

When live mapping an engineer will detect if his work is having a detrimental effect IE if the extra tourqe is causing the clutch to slip . It will show clearly on his screen because the revs will rise but the power and tourqe displayed on his screen will not. He or she can alter the parameters to avoid this or not alter at all. If you have s vehicle that is close to its design parameters this is invaluable. It might just save the cost of a clutch !!

Mapping is having cake. Live mapping is having cake and eating it .

Why do half a job ?

Oh and my middle names Tony ...:D

Hi Tony
I have been doing this for 11 years now so have some experience I suppose lol. My first Motorhome was an 2008 mobilvetta with the Peugeot boxer 2.2 ford engine. On a decent run standard I was averaging 27 before and 32mpg after the remap. My current 2.3 fiat was 24 before and 27 now although it's only done 3000 miles so I'm hoping for a bit more as the mileage gets higher. The best thing though mate is the drivability, less gear change, more torque and better economy, win win.

Had my hymer b584 done, bags more power, bags more fuel, bags more cash on a new clutch.
Fuel consumption went from 28 mpg down to 22 mpg, and not through heavy right foot, clutch kept slipping with only 18k on the clock so replaced it £500.
So bad I contacted company who remapped it to replace original mapping and no money returned.
Needless to say my Burstner on the X250 will definitely not be going down that road..
Maybe I was unlucky.

Hmm, doesn't seem you get much mileage out of a clutch from a Fiat. I've been driving a Mercedes Sprinter van which has done over 385 thousand miles. Clutch still feels like new.(Famous last words)
