Hi All,

I'm looking for pointers towards me uprating the wheel size on our 'van from 15" to 16".

It's a 2.8JTD Hobby with 15" Wheels.
The 'van has had it's weight uprated to 3700Kgs and I would like to provide that extra payload margin in the tyres that uprating the wheels would provide.
I'm aware that in doing so, the speedo would be less optomistic than it is now but I reckon the increase in rolling circumference would probably bring the speedo up to being bang on.
I also appreciate that there would be a marginal difference in gearing but lets just say, I'm happy with the performance of the 'van and I don't see the wheel change being that big a deal.

Any pointers as to donor vehicles would be appreciated. I'm not bothered about having alloys so if there's a model of van that could be in a scrapyard, so much the better.

PS. I forgot to add that the wheels at present are 5 stud with a 118mm distance between studs.

It will have an effect on the gearing and therefore the mpg as well as the the speedometer.

How much of an effect will depend on the gearbox.

16" wheels for earlier vehicles are 130 pcd Only the new models share 118 pcd between 15 and 16
Also in your era the hub centre is smaller on 15"

Your vehicle is designed for 15" and most likely the hubs brakes and suspension components will be for lighter duty

Why would the extra size of wheels (with heavier load rated tyres) be detrimental to the operation of the brakes and suspension? I would have thought the wheels would make no difference and the extra in the tyres be a positive thing.

They do do 16" wheels for them as I have the option to use them on mine & mine is even earlier than the op's.
-No problem finding them here in a scrap yard. At 3,5 tonnes it would already have the largest wheel cylinders & front calipers & if it has been uprated to 3,7t already it would seem springs etc; aren't needed ,just find some wheels.

My 2005 Hymer (244BPMBB BYC) is on a Maxi chassis but has 15" wheels on 118mm PCD (and presumably hub carriers, hubs, and brakes) specified by (I assume) Hymer. I'd like to go for 16" wheels because it's ludicrously undergeared and the speedo is 6mph fast at 65mph. 65=71. If Techno is correct and later 16" wheels are 118 PCD that might just be the solution I was looking for.

Yes Tony I'm near as dammit certain the new vans share hub hole size and PCD because I bought a recent 16" wheel carrier and it would not take a X250 16" wheel :LOL:

That would be something I have not come across so I can't argue Gus but the 16" would be special with a 73mm hub centre and 118pcd

They are much heavier so I would have thought requiring bigger bearings? but I agree with fun 55 that its deffo tell the insurance

You've only got to search for parts to see how many different options there are especially on brakes

Yes , exactly. You can lose the will to live sourcing the correct parts.

Been motorhoming for 15yrs.had an American RV for 7yrs,Now got a Niesmann Bischoff Arto 88F
Also make sure a 16" tyre and wheel will clear under the rear wheel arches and also on full lock on the fronts.
the other point about the insurance is also a must because they will look on it as a modification.

109 rated tyres have a max load of 1030kgs. My rear axle has a max allowable load of 2000kgs. 1030 x 2 =2060
60Kgs out of 2000Kgs is not very much. I'm trying to make that figure bigger.
Look, I'm not trying to fit a F1 Engine in this thing. I'm thinking safety.

make sure the axle can take the higher weight . you may get higher tyres but that may be more than the axle can take .
i fitted new axles to my trailer a few years ago. i put much higher ones on so that at 70 yr old i can slide them forward and lighten the load on my fifth wheel.
the old axles werent high enough to allow it .
i thought for the future and put stronger ones on .
i can also change to 6 inch wheels and tyres from the 14inch it as now again getting ready for higher axle weights .
all the brakes and bearings are done as well.

So you think that's unsafe?

I don't regard my present set up as 'Unsafe'. However, having read on here of members of this forum who habitually drive their 'vans without a clue as to how much their vehicles weigh, let alone whether or not their 'vans are overladen, I believe it's better to have some amount of safety margin in such things as load rating.
I'll try to put this in a different context.
If the present load rating on my tyres were to be expressed as a speed which should never be exceeded, and the speed limit was 70mph, I would be illegal at just over 72mph.
Thats how close I am to illegality at the moment.
I'd just like some slack, given the opportunity

I think the 'van has 6J rims. According to the prophets, it won't take a 225 tyre.
Back to the drawing board.

Well just to confuse things even more our van IVECO chassis has 6jx16 rims and the standard fit tyre is 225x75x16.

Just noticed that the link I gave has tyre pressures against axle weights for each tyre, so quite handy as well.
