I’m kind of thinking of heading south solo for a few months, I’m between jobs so rather then hang  about here, I may try it on my own.......

Wife has started a new job, but she can fly over October half term and if I am still down that way Christmas as well. Have never travelled on my own so not sure if I am up to it, but willing to give it a try rather then being idle and bored here.......

Some specific worries/questions:

Alicante region seems popular?

Recommendations please for sites to head for?
What would I have to pay for a decent site per week?

where could I get a 2009 ACSI card?

Campsites open in winter on route and in Spain. How do you find them? will use Aires in France...

Do they have TV connection on some sites? As I don’t have a roof dish

Will I find people willing to talk and to socialise with? As I am not really a loner....... Is there a social scene on popular sites?

I have my E bike so getting around no problem.

I have refillable gas bottles. Are there garages in Spain that sell LPG at the pump?

route south would probably be head for west coast of France, to Pamplona/Zaragoza/Alicante. So this will probably be OK for me. I might even try North Africa!:Eeek:

Thanks Ken......whats the weather like roughly October/November time?

was hoping to get some personal recommendations for sites to stay on rather then have to try them out to be honest.

I know I asked a lot of stuff and don't expect anyone to answer point by point...... but there seems to be a lot of experienced travellers on here hence my first Looooong post!

I will try to answer your questions in the order that you have posed them.

Alicante area.

There are some good sites from Oliva down to Denia and Javea. We use Kiko Park at Oliva quite a bit as it is an easy cycle to town,on the beach and good local restaurants in walking distance. You will need an ACSI card to get a good rate here unless you stay for 6 months!! Either of the sites in Javea are also good.

Sites in Spain basically get cheaper the longer you stay. One or two days is expensive, 3 weeks is reasonable.Expect to pay 10/12 Euros a night for long stays 20+ for short stays.

WE prefore the Murcia region in December and January as the weather is better and we pay 10 euros a night including electric.

It is worth buying the Caravan Clubs International camping books.

You will get the ACSI book from Vicarious Books who are the UK agent, find them throught the internet.

Some sites do have TV hook up but they tend to be the excetion rather than the rule. I think La Manga has it and some sites around Benidorm. I am sure someone else will let you know on that one.

Socialising is not a problem!!Everyone chats invites you for drinks, go out for lunch together. I do n ot think that you will have a problem in this area.

If you have refillable gas cylinders fill them in France before entering Spain and they will be enough for the winter if you are on hook up all the time.

Hope this helps.

Some specific worries/questions:

Alicante region seems popular? Check out the ACSI Book for cheap sites or do a bit of wild camping en route

Recommendations please for sites to head for? Plenty in ACSI book. We stop at Roquetas de Mar south of Almeria (Not ACSI but good discounts afer 1 wee. kThere are long term settlers there i.e. 5 - 6 months so company guaranteed.
What would I have to pay for a decent site per week? 15-20 euro per night.

where could I get a 2009 ACSI card? Contact Vicarious Books on line for the 2009 book as 2010 book not jet avail Also look at getting an Aires book as these are mostly free in France. Do you have the Caravan Club Europe book for a good selection of sites?

Campsites open in winter on route and in Spain. How do you find them? will use Aires in France... ACSI book and Caravan Club book

Do they have TV connection on some sites? As I don’t have a roof dish. Never seen one I have a small dish bought from Roadpro. Good reception for Sky news, sport and Radio 1-5 but no Corrie or Eastenders as its too small thank goodness!!

Will I find people willing to talk and to socialise with? As I am not really a loner....... Is there a social scene on popular sites? Definately You only have a muck in to have a good time

I have my E bike so getting around no problem.

I have refillable gas bottles. Are there garages in Spain that sell LPG at the pump? No idea on that point

If you go to Roquetas look for Bob the builder and Glynis as they live on site and do Morocco every year so have good tips etc.
New grandchild due late Oct and wish my wife would let me go it alone and follow on but no chance!! have a safe journey:thumb:

If you go south a bit more you should be ok with the weather still warm, have been in the sea here in October, and you could find some good deals as the summer as been a bit of a let down for some sites a lot have come and just wild camp this year

You seem to have answer to many of your ? except travelling down through Spain.

Vicarious books have a book with all the aires in Spain & Portugal with a few down through Spain. We stopped at a couple last winter& they were OK.

Hi LPG map here: Autogas map of Spain - Google Maps

There's one in the avenue de Elche close to Alicante, a lot of these stations sell only LPG (Autogas) and are on industrial estates.

Hi judge go to the download section of this site, its on the righthand side down the bottom, and select "downloads" then navigation, then tomtom, then Autogas in Western Europe.

Or click this link
Link Removed

Spanish stations vary, some having UK bayonet while others have French claw guns

So I need an 2009 ACSI card (if I go)

have not rejoined the CC because a waste of money as we hate the regimentation and atmosphere on their sites......have looked on Eb*y for the CC books 1&2 but nothing

is there a good alternative book for winter sites in Spain?

If I haven't picked up work (or the promise of work) by end of this month I will probably go......The wife says its kinda OK but I'm not so sure she means it! lol.:Eeek:

Doh! I forgot to ask re moble comms......

My son bought a vodaphone PAYG sim during the summer...unlimited texts and 300 mins plus no roaming charges. it was ideal for our month in Italy. unfortunatly that offer has ended.

anyone now the best sim card deal for keeping in touch with The UK from spain?

plans put back a bit as to much going on, and the wife is a likle to keen to see me go...so a likle suspicious! lol

maybe head oft end of October. any one point me to a toll free route via Barritz?

have bought a blackberry for keeping in touch, along with the laptop. you can chat away for free (a mixed blessing:winky:) to each other using BB messaging and even send photos. this is a worldwide service as long as you sign up for internet and BBM £5 @ a month - but not internet in Europe! just use it on wi fi there, or your phone bill will be catastrophic!

If I don't make it away before Christmas thinking of joining you lot in lake Garda (have been there last 3 years with my family) and then heading of solo to Greece.........

decisions decisions lol

I'm off to Portugal via Biarritz on Nov 1 or 2. I never use the toll roads unless someone else is paying for them. On that route there are many kilometres of "free" motorways/dual carriageway but I also enjoy the narrow but straight, poplar lined "normal" French roads.

In general I have the Spanish "normal" roads practically empty and fun to potter along...

We are in Fusina looking over the lagoon at Venice. Go there tomorrow, should have gone today but couldn't get the outboard to start. On way to Sicily for Christmas.
Haven't stayed at either Bonterra or Marjal but have met a lot of people who have stayed at Marjal and seemed very happy with it. I believe it has a very high proportion of long stay Brits so should be good for the social life.
