Hello everyone. I am very worried and starting to feel down. I am now countdown to 1 year before I buy and live in a motorhome so I have started winding down my homely possessions.

Last night as one of me check list items I decided to start to check approx insurance costs based on a few motorhomes (£30-35k range) I have seen in showrooms locally to gather a prices estimate.

The websites I tried after filing in basic information about the motorhome and myself all came back with no quote available for my circumstances.

I was shocked and seen my dream slip away. I plan to live in the motorhome full time but this was not asked.

Are there any pre requisites that are required to insure a motorhome. Ive never had a bump, points or claimed. ive been driving 25 year so I hope it is not me :(

Thanks Chris.

Not long enough!
I think that comfort are the only company that will insure folk living full time in their van. It's quite a price to pay but take it or leave it. I have spoken to underwriters to argue that we can do less milage as we are parked up more, and also being with the van more, less likely to get stolen.
Fell on deaf ears, bur I would say, don't cheat the system as the problems will start I'd you need to claim.
Sometimes the wording is a bit grey.
Depends if you want to make it work..
Not all insurance companies show up on comparison sites, so best to talk to someone at the end if the phone.

You won't get an insurance quote for any vehicle without having the actual details of said vehicle. Nobody will offer you ball park figures.

From your post I'm thinking you are planning to full time? If so then you are limited as to who you can deal with as very few insurers offer true full timing policies. I believe Comfort is one that does but again they will need details of the vehicle before offering a quote.
You won't be able to get a quote online from any of them - you will need to phone and speak to someone.

From what I've read on the subject before be prepared for it to be a lot of money.

Why not get the details of some vans you have been looking at, you only need reg, make & model then phone for quote.
As said Comfort are one of the few companies that will insure full timers.
Expect to pay 2-3 times the normal price probably wrong side of £700.

40 years under canvas: Motorhome 2016 To 2020
I couldn't get any quotes on line earlier this year when I tried because I wanted the cover to start more than 1 month after the date I was asking for quotes.

So, if you're putting in cover to start nearer to your D-Day in 12 months time, that might be the reason for not getting any quotes?

Just a thought...

Thanks folks, the showroom I was looking at close by gave you the licence plates of the MH so I thought this would be a good start.

Yeh looks like I need to pop on the phone and rely on good old fashioned telephone calls.

I am budgeting for £3k for insurance living full time.

I really hope the dream of doing it is not as hard as the dream of living it.

With me being diabetic also I need to renew my license every 3 years or 1 year if I want my over 3.5 tonne back on my licence.... it is all seeming now like a struggle.

You may just be trying car/commercial van sites.. You need the specialists Motorhome ones..
Some will quote online but in most cases the old telephone call is the best..

Hi Chris..

I used to live near you in Inverkip.. I worked at the power station in 1979..

we also did three years full-time living in a motorhome.. so know the hurdles well.. none are insurmountable..

as already mentioned, as far as I know, Comfort Insurance are the only broker who insure full timers.. To get insurance you will need a c/o address, that could be a family member, friend or relative.. you also need this for driving licence and vehicle registration .. Give Comfort a call, they are very helpful and will give good advice..

Insurance cost will depend mainly on the value of the motorhome and contents.. budget on around £1200

the other forum mentioned is an excellent place for advice.. it's a sister site and free to join.. http://www.motorhome365.com/forum/

good luck ..

Living the dream.
As has been said, pick the reg number from a Moho you like and talk to a human, well as human as you can find anyway. plus theres an address you will need to have, a family member or PO box number if they will allow it.
Good luck.

Thanks folks, I am just off the phone with Comfort, they have said the MH has to be newer than 2010, this has also put a spanner in the works, as this forces me into buy newer at much lower size and spec based on my budget.

I plan on spending a few nights at "Lundy Bay" Scotjimland :)

Ive seen youtube videos of UK folk living full time in older style MH so I hope I can find a solution.

First time I have heard that rule.. I'm sure there are other FTs on here with older vans.

the ones you see on youtube .. who know's , maybe not insured as full timers..some do risk it .. which is just stupid..

Yeh just called them and they said it has to be newer that 2010 and above 25k.

I am getting very frustrated now and after years of saving and this being my last year I never knew this bit would be the show stopper.

Since july 2009 And Still Going Strong
The 2010 rule came in I think in the last 12 months, I was with comfort then when it came up to renewal in July they said they were unable to offer cover. We're with Caravan Guard at the moment but they won't offer full time, only 9 months Permanent residence, inclusive of Europe. this just worked out ok with us moving from house to van. But this year we must also fine the dreaded full-time cover.
The policy giving 9 months full-time ( policy for a year in total) was £875. Your £3000 will get you the cover you need but as said before you will have to do plenty of ringing around.

Remember insurance companies change there policy wording all the time so ignoring the price what some may offer full-time now may not in a years time. When we first went full timing between 2009-12 there were several companies offering full-time but for what ever reason they don't now. Back then we paid around £1200 per year.

You will probably read many debates on Fun and 365 re insurance for full-time living.

I have only this week started pulling together companies to contact which may do full time.

For some good information take a look at Margaret and Barry Williamson's Blog/website, theres lots of good information on there for full timers. Heres there link to 32 insurance companies.
www.magbaztravels.com/content/view/565/147/

I know AIB did offer full-time but it was just to expensive for us.

You will be able to get the insurance needed but just needs a little time to sort it. As you are doing get the groundwork done know so when the time is closer you have all the companies details to hand and it will be less stressful.

Shawn.

So the 2010 is a new rule, is this a 6 year at a time thing or a 2010 thing, if its a 6 year at a time thing them that would mean if I wanted 4 years in the same MH it would need to be just 2 years old now.

I will take a look at Magbaz blogs, I am enjoying reading blogs as it is giving me more thing to think about so this is my last year before I take the leap and I honestly didnt expect this insurance part to be this annoying.

Its a bit chicken and egg feeling, i dont want to invest time in a MH purchase if insurers dont like it but as I want to live in it I should be allowed to choose what I like.

Im going to need bigger slot in my calendar dedicated to insurance I think.

I just called them again and this person told me that as long as it is over 25k OR newer than 2010 if its a none standard or America type unit. For a coachbuild she said as long as it was over 25k. Do you guys have a standard coachbuild?

Can you clarify this, please? Are you saying that for an American RV, Comfort will only offer full-timing insurance if the RV is newer than 2010, regardless of its value?

Yeh I called them today to ask if I bought a 2010 now would it be no good next year and they said as long as it was over 25k.

I mentioned that I called the other day and the girl said it had to be younger than 2010. The girl today said that would only be for American style RV other than that a typical chassis build would be covered full time as long as it was greater than 25k.

Which made sense, there cant be many MH younger than 2010 that would fall under 25k mark.

I asked to to clarify it on the phone and she could not understand why another member of her team would have said that.

I mentioned a 32k 2007 Kontiki and she said that would be fine for full time living insurance.

I'm baffled as to why an RV should be treated differently to a british/european motorhome in this respect.

I've just had confirmation from AIB that the same restriction on American RVs applies to their policy (as it is also with Aviva).

Thanks Steve, I don't plan on buying an RV but hopefully this info help people who maybe thinking of it. Its strange as an American RV is more likely yo be lived in than a EU C class I would have thought.

We are full timing, and have been for 6 years, in a 1992 Hymer insured through Comfort that has a value a lot less then £25k. I imported this as a used van from Germany in 2006 and was insured from the port of entry by Comfort.

As long as we continue to renew they will cover us, I have been told by them.

The premium is £1,400 including full breakdown cover. ABI said they would have to start at £1,500 as a minimum, before taking any details, for insurance with the same company AVIVA, on the same terms.

NFU will no longer cover full time use. Only AVIVA will cover with no UK residence and no Electoral Roll.

Thats good to know, I will need tocall them closer to the time and ask what their conditions are so I don't go buying a unit they wont cover.

Its just a pity there is only 1 insurer that will cover full time.
