OK peeps, need some input/reviews. After @eddievanbitz did all the work on my van, he said I could do with fitting a battery monitor to, erm, monitor the battery!!!

I've been doing some research, and I have kind of made a decision on purchasing a nasa bm2, it looks ideal, it supports my battery output, and is about the right size for someone who has really rubbish eyesight.

Does anyone have any words of waning, or better suggestions before I hit the buy button on flea bay?

I don't have one, but I believe Eddie, and others, recommend the Victron battery monitor in preference to the Nasa model.

That has not come up in my searches, I will look into that one! Thanks

I donr believe you Andy....you took something out ! ;)
Yes it was fitted in an un user friendly position inaccurate and ultimately ignored. If you understand battery voltage under load and with no load it's unnecessary

OK found it, looks a little too small for someone who is horrendously long sighted. I like things I can read without glasses, which means big numbers.

Take your pick

Good as any. You only need to understand that they are figures with no load on the battery
AND of course no battery charger! as that would not be relevant

Anything below 50% state of charge is damaging to battery life long term. Always fully re charge as a matter of urgency

Now my solar battery bank for my inverter may drop to 11.9 volts when its giving 150 amps but that isn't a worry as it does not reflect the state of charge and the fact that it will rapidly climb back to 12.6 plus (after inverter finishes) is the reassurance that I don't need a battery monitor to tell me the same

You see that's the info I am after, I want to know how much I am killing the batteries on the inverter, and whether I should forgo that extra capucino :D

The bigger the battery bank the more smug you can be about not running out  but it's the voltage with no load that matters (y)

I find you develop a 'feel', based on voltage alone, about the state of the batteries. Anything else is interesting but not particularly helpful. The important thing is as Andy states above.

I guess the Victron unit is quite small at 2" diameter. Attached is another one recommended to me by Udo Lang of Schaudt. I haven't bothered to fit one and it may not be easily obtainable in the UK but offer the info in case it helps.
(I believe Grommet has experience of using both Nasa and Victron monitors - you might care to ask his advice).
