That high 5th gear high ratio on our 2002, 2.8 JTD has never really been a concern to me, if I get that long old climb on a motorway I just drop down to 4th and keep to about 50mph until I'm over the other side. But, we're thinking of getting a Smart car and trailer and I'm wondering if that high ratio 5th might not cope with the extra load.

I believe it's possible to get the ratio changed easily enough if need be.

What do we think?

This could be a recipe for a gear ratio meet.. turn up throw your gear in the basket ....
Err hang on a sec ..

I have the opposite problem - high rpm in 5th. Is there any information available that relates 5th gear ratio & wheel size to mph/1000rpm?
The difference between them is about 400 rpm @ 60MPH, so highest about 2000 rpm & lowest is about 2800rpm.
High(53x31)=1.7-1, medium (51x33)= 1.54-1, low (45x33)=1.36-1.
I have a pairof the 45x33(low) if anybody wants some.

That is very useful, thanks.
I wouldn't mind betting the medium would be good for me when towing, won't really know though until I give it a go!

I had my engine remapped and I can happily tow in top now, before I used have to come down one for the revs
Ducato X250 2.3 multi jet
