As you can see we haven't quite got off yet and still need to ask advice.
We have got the shelf part pulled out, wheeled the bike up the ramp on the back but the pedals stick out and handlebars.
Are you supposed to invert them or remove or flatten before attaching to the fixed arms (Hymer)
Advice much appreciated as always.

Ok will do
Does the bike not sit on the shelf once it's attached to the arms?
Maybe the shelf is just for loading?
When it stands on the shelf the pedals scratch the back of the van.

The bike should not touch the van at all. What make of bike rack is it?

We changed the pedals on our bikes for folding so they don't clash
We also mount our bikes 69 style so that the handlebars don't clash

I do turn my handlebars through 45 degrees so that they don't stick out but more importantly don't rub on the back of the van. The pedals don't come anywhere near the back of the van on our Omnistor lifting bike rack.

I'm confused! A pedal bike rack doesn't have a ramp ... is it a motorcycle rack?

A photo of your bike rack/ramp would help together with the year, make and model of your Motorhome!

I really do think that is a scooter rack and it probably/might pull out a bit more than that. It is not designed for bicycles.

The clamps fit so I was hoping to use that with extra cord to hold it in place.

If you are putting just the one bike on you should be OK, but will need to turn the handle bars round. That should be as simple as loosening the head stock and tunrnun the bars a quarter rotation.

Also you will need to strap the wheels to the wheel channel otherwise it could jump out if you hit a bump.

I used to turn my handlebars thro' 90deg (although it wasn't strictly necessary). One day, riding slowly :) , I turned the 'bars but the wheel stayed straight ahead  .

Please learn from my error and check your nuts are tight  - Gordon

PS Now I just ensure that I fasten the top grip somewhere which pushes the bar away from the van (y) .

I'm inclined to agree with this. In addition to the advice you already have, any chance you could put one bike inside the van, whilst you are travelling? We often do that before we board the ferry. As already mentioned, a red striped board is a requirement and fixing the wheels to the bottom rail on the rack is absolutely essential. We always lock them on too, using heavy duty bike cable locks.

We have now managed to pull it right out. Are the arms that extend from the bar along the back adjustable in length? We couldn't see how to do that. Maybe our nice garage mechanic who is changing our tyres can have a look.

Jac, I really don't want to put you off, but that rack is not designed for a peddle bike. The arms will not be extendable as they are designed to hold a motor scooter. The bigger of the two channels, I.e nearest the van is where the scooter wheels are supposed to go. The channel that you have your bike in is the just the lighting and number plate panel, it may not be designed to take the weight of your bike.

@Jaws @Techno can one of you comment on this please? Do you think the bike will be secure enough as it is in the photo on page one?

The other thing I thought of is that if the scooter rack is not full pulled out and locked in place, will it not go back in and damage both van and bike who he hits the brakes?

Thanks
I'm pretty sure the last owner used it for bikes and then electric bikes.
We have now pulled the flat ramp out totally. We can't adjust the arms though other than turn them.
I will have a mechanic look at it tomorrow.
Could you advise me on the best straps to use?
