We didn't get organised in time with the motorhome but came here (le champ du moulin ) anyway to stay in the cabins.
They are really comfortable, warm, great showers and nightly sauna
Ten mins up the road to the gondola and you're in L2A
Having a great skiing week.
Plan to return with the moho

We are off for the 3rd time in 3 weeks time to Champ in the Moho. Guaranteed skiing in LDA and a lovely campsite with a sauna. Keeping our fingers x that the snow keeps falling and the temps stay low so the lower runs are in good condition too.

Just back now
Three solid days of snowing - you are in luck Michelle!! That won't melt fast.
Did you see le parking
de Passarelles? It is in les Deux alpes and had about ten mohos when I passed it in a ski bus. It is on the ski bus circuit, seemed to have a ski lift right there - seemed to be an aire. Have you stayed there? Cheaper than Champ du moulin for another year maybe. (Or toggle between the two to save money. - I am somewhat addicted to that sauna after skiing though!)

Yes, we Used it for one night when we arrived a day early a couple of years ago. It's €8 a night without hook up and €12 with. It's definitely worth considering if money is a bit tight. In my old age I prefer the relative luxury of the campsite, and as you said...the sauna is lovely after a days skiing. Our van was a bit full last time. We were 5 adults and drying and storing clothes would have been a rather tight. The downside of the campsite is that the gondola stops at 7 so you can't really enjoy the night life in LDA which you could if you stayed up top. We use aires on the drive down and back, some are better than others!!!! Roll on Easter.

Ah that's good to know too. We were told 8pm the Venosc telecabine and were furious to find it was 7pm (ok we didn't check!)
We had to take a taxi back (8 of us) and it cost 100e and took 40 minutes!! 30 km apparently. We wondered if we'd been ripped off.
We are just about to start full timing on our moho and thought we should aim for at least half aires to save money. But i agree about the comfort aspect in my old age too. It sounds like you are both not retired though? So not as old as us in our 60s.
Which aires do you use going down and up?

The gondola stops at 7 in winter and 8 in summer. My husband just said he would risk the walk down for that cost !!! Definitely a rip off. We are both early fifties so a little while to go until we can sell up and travel. We are goIng from Poole this time as it was only £80 more than a four hour drive to the tunnel and it is only a mile from our home so a no brainer really. We used to get a late night crossing at the tunnel and have stopped at Calais port itself. Have tried Gravelines once but it was full but managed to park nearby in a car park. We have used Epernay several times, again always busy but there is parking alongside the river. Lans le Sonier was another one. Otherwise we just guesstimate how much driving we are going to do and look up a nearby aire. Some are better than others but as long as there is water and maybe a toilet then we are happy. There is usually a bakery nearby for breakfast.

We are heading to Alpe d'heuz on the 21st for a weeks skiing in our van.
This will be the 4th Easter in a row at this resort.
Aire is 500 mts from main ski lifts and is 10 euro per night.
Room for at least 50 vans but no hook up.

Yes we have solar.
The little bit of camping we have done so far in a dull but not too cold UK climate suggested we needed to fill our two cylinders every week and that was with not running heating in the day but driving. If we are camped skiing for a week then I'm pretty sure we'll need more regular forays to top up. Our campsite sold Gaz but I don't think that's LPG

You will need to have propane gas for the sub zero temps. We normally leave our heating on very low when we are out and as have a winterised van with all tanks internal this is normally not an issue. Our heating is also the wet ALDE radiator system which you can switch off for a couple of hours without the van cooling down too much.
We find that as the days can be quite sunny , you get good power through the solar panel, obviously it could be snowing also and no power!

Yes we have liquid propane gas.
Not heard of that wet ALDE system
Can that be installed alongside LPG Truma system?

we were at LDA just after Christmas - very little snow apart from glacier - skiing through blades of grass is a whole new experience. The new blue slope right down to the LDA central was open and is a real leg burner and fantastic fun. We also pay (very little) to keep our skis at Brun Sports during the week, much easier than walking with them up the hill to the Venosc cable car and through town every day

Our 2nd time at champ du moulin and definitely not our last - its great.
IMG_1201.jpg
May mix it up next time wit a bit of campsite and a bit of aire in LDA (have done 1 night there before) as no longer going at peak times! Apparently only 2nd time in 18 years for champ du moulin reporting snow deficit at Christmas. That said because its in the valley the snow stays on the campsite so be careful as can have icy patch as you drive in and getting on to pitch. Also bit icy need the fresh water fill up.
When we took an evening crossing we stopped at Mutigny overnight - lovely but middle of nowhere and winding, narrow, hilly roads so won't repeat again in Winter
this year we left early doors boxing day and drove all the way down to Burgundy country in one day, stopping overnight La Chapelle de Guinchay in large aire outside tourist office - perfect for head down and move on. It took about 4 hours from there including a stop at Casino at Bourg D'Oisans to get some supplies - much cheaper than in LDA and easier to transport than down the cable car. Also has a bourn for motorhomes

Interested in the Epernay aire as heading for Austria next week and thinking of doing the Reims /Metz route, down to Germany as faster than horrific roads in Belgium!

We are going to camp Du Moulin at Easter in the rv, firstime skiing for me, so beware on the slopes. :) 6 of us, wife, daughter and sil plus two grandchildren. Really looking forward to it.

A bit last minute so could only get a midnight crossing Dover to Dunkirk on Thursday night, hoping to get a few hours in the Carrefour supermarket aire up the road and then drive to Bresacon via Belgium and Luxembourg so missing all the toll roads. As a class 3 they would cost me about €150 each way. Be there by the evening and find an aire somewhere around there. Then off to Venosc, hoping to get there middle late afternoon Saturday. That's the plan anyway.

Stay where you are!
Use up your gas then feed their [bottle bought from campsite/local] gas through your BBQ point.
I have a large 'any' bottle outside with a regulator on and a rubber pipe to a BBQ fitting, you send gas IN the BBQ point.(y)

I would highly recommend the aire at Bergues, just 15 minutes from Dunkirk ` always space with a lidl and leclerc nearby. In fact you have to go passed Bergues to head on down

You will have a wonderful time - not sure if you are having lessons or not, but the nursery slopes at the bottom are free and you do not need a pass for these - worth checking with your ski -school if pass is not included where the lessons take place on the first few days. This could save you a lot of money. You can always quickly buy a pass in the day if you need to go up and it is cheaper after midday. Worth considering. From Venosc you would only have to buy a cable car day return. Did this with my daughter this year who was a novice.

Alpe'd'heuz also has a huge novice area and while you need a pass it is free for the begineers slopes

Hi soozywoozy, been having hour lessons on the Ipswich dry ski slope, had 7 so far, still doing crap snow plough turns off the top, but getting better. :D Got time for about 2 more before we go. sil is a boarder and will be wanting me to go up onto the glacier with him, 9 year old grandson can ski, he's had lessons for the past 2-3 years in Tignes, and can't understand why grandad can't ski well, its so easy.

Google maps and tomtom route me up the A16/E40 towards Bruges to miss the toll roads, going via Bergues I rejoin the tomtom route at Namur, do you think thats a better route?

Ian[/QUOTE]
Actually I would stay in France on A25 towards Lille - if I recall rightly and have just checked there is no toll on this bit
https://www.saneftolling.co.uk/support/toll_rates
I would then head off to Tournai, Namur, Arlon, fill up diesel in Luxembourg (anywhere its the same price on motorway as everywhere else)Metz etc
We have done this route before stopping at Arlon overnight, but its a good 4 hours in mh from calais

re the skiing - the glacier is fantastic, but if closed or revolting weather the "Cretes" area is good for beginners accessed via les oeufs blanc lift. I would leave the new blue down to resort to end of week when feeling a bit more confident (there are definite small areas more akin to red and areas needing turns in limited width!)
I have used the European Skischool twice as private lessons - once for myself, 2 hours to refresh and refine my technique ( I has an Aha moment!) and then 8hours for my daughter (the novice). They are exceedingly good!

We did use the tolls this year, class 2 (should be 3, but somehow never picks up!) and it cost £170 return
The bit calais to reims is only about £25, but Reims to lyon is about £40 with a few extra £10/12 here and there

Route looks good soozy thanks, 3rd change of plan. Was going straight down the tolls until RRV on RVOC convinced me that going toll free made sense.
Just checked tolls and class 3 is €174.8 each way:eek:, in the past I have been charged 2 or 3, depending on the booth operator, but mostly 3 from memory.

Seriously considering buy some boots from the Alpine Room at Danbury, they do a boot fitting service, the boots I at get at the dry slope are flipping awful, don't think I could do a day in them, expensive I know but I think they might be a good investment.

Don't want you to change your mind again, but we went last Easter and all the shops have the end of season sales on! We ended up buying new boots out there, custom fit for a fraction of the U.K. Cost. The euro was better then admittedly but even so.
We also bought some ex rental Ski's in brilliant condition for the same price as ski rental and figured if they were no good we'd lost nothing as same price as rental and if good then we gained! 4 trips on still going well

Is there a Decatlon near where you live.

They currently have their end of season ski sale on and we bought 4 sets of new skis last week at 70% off marked price, not quite one years rental but close

Closest Decatlon is Lakeside, not to worried about hiring the ski's, at the moment a good pair would be wasted on me. :)
Can anyone recommend a hire shop in LDA? sil needs to hire ski's and boots for grandson and wife, also can we hire heated lockers to keep them in? Be less trouble than faffing about bringing them back in the bubble. I know the site recommends a shop but wonder if theirs better or not?

We use brun sports which is right of the bottom of main cable and oeufs. Very central for coming down and apres ski, and just a few metres from lift. The one recommended is close to the Venosc cable but you still have to walk 10 minutes to nearest lift or get on the bus with all the others with their skis.
There is a bus at Venosc cable which takes you to centre runs every 10 minutes or a very easy (without Ski's) walk. If you have just missed it, it is worth walking, if it's due in 5 minutes hang on!
Heated lockers at Brun sports, very efficient and on the level - some of the other lockers are down stairs.
if you pre book on line (ski set I think) locker is not included, if you hire in the shop it is, so do the maths!
We paid €162 for Ski's and poles for 2 (intermediate and beginner), not helmets (have our own) for 4 days and €80 for 4 people , 5 days locker. Forgot didn't need 5 days as last day you bring them home!
