I've made a reservation at a site in Annecy and received an email reply today.
I've downloaded the attachment in the reply and it understandably is in French.
It's a gif file and I'm trying to copy and paste it into google translator but not having much look.
I've converted it to a pdf but still can't right click to copy it.
Any ideas how to do it ? Don't fancy typing it all out.
TIA

Are you sure you've got the right attachment?

Gif files are usually small image files or animations. On an email the site logo in the signature might be a gif for example. It stands for Graphics Interchange Format.

I've never heard of any kind of document being saved in this format. I'm not even sure how you would go about it and it would make no sense to do it anyway.

If the attachment is displaying content in the email reply try right clicking on and saving that.

Even when you get the right file you can't just copy and paste the file into Google Translate. You're going to need to open it, highlight the text you want and then right click copy that.

GIF stands for Graphical Interchange Format. The file is basically a bitmap image i.e. a picture so is not a text based format that can be coped and pasted. Coverting to PDF does nothing as the converter just sees it a a picture that it imports to a pdf.

You may be able to print it out then scan the picture it with a character reader.

Edit There are a number of online OCRs just google convert gif to text

@Tom A

You're right, it is a gif.

They've printed the confirmation onto paper and then scanned it back to digital in order to email it to you. o_O

Leave it with me for a little while. I just need to remember what to do with it.

Thanks Nick.
All sorted. Just need to sort out how to pay deposit.
We've got a French Chef at work so I'll get him to ring tomorrow.

When I had to do something similar with an Italian site last year I did it by bank transfer. There isn't much more to it than doing a UK one, you just use a couple of different numbers than sort code/AC number.
