Anyone got any ideas how to repair a stripped thread in chipboard?
OH keeps putting tins, bottles, any other heavy stuff you can think of in the deep bottom drawer in the MH. I suspect the hinge dropped slightly, which meant the catch was only just making with the latch plate so when I went round a roundabout all that weight pulled the screw out of the drawer front. When I checked all the other screws found that most of them tightened slightly.
Catch is on inside of drawer front so need to careful of screw length so it doesn't pierce drawer front.
Thought about filling screw hole with glue, then refit screw when dry but think glue will crack, any other suggestions (useful) will be considered
Cheers
Tim

I am damned if I know what the name of these things are, but essentially, it is a large bore piece of metal that you screw into the chipboard. It contains a smaller screw hole in the centre. They are sold in most DIY stores to repair stripped chipboard threads!
So all you do is drill out the hole, screw one of these in, and then screw new screws into the centre of the thingy, hope you understand my rambling! :D

Fill the hole with glue, and fit the screw whilst glue still wet. That way you get max adhesion to both screw and rough chipboard hole?

Depends on the extent of the damage to the existing hole. The matchstick trick is great if there's not much damage and the hole is reasonably deep otherwise, like @GJH I'd go for the Cuprinol Wood Filler instead.

As TheBig1 and others say matchstick or I use a cocktail stick dipped into PVA wood glue, stick it in the hole snap off and then possibly other 1 or 2 and then screw the screw straight in and let it all set, anything else is just making an easy job difficult.

I knew Guisborough was posh but didn't realise the residents were above using common old matchsticks :LOL:
I should have add but you never get stripped screws in Niesmann+Bischoff,

But you do, especially if you are a rough a--e.

PS no matches in our van, and the advantage is that the cocktail sticks are smaller so 3 of them keep the screw on the centre of the hole, or am I taking this too seriously.

This thread has just reminded me of one of the favourite sayings of my woodwork teacher, Dick Mabey at Sandown on the Isle of Wight, "In glue and dust we put our trust. If all else fails then putty must!"

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll try the cocktail stick idea and maybe some of the others if that doesn't work - but won't be trying the 'buy a Hymer' one

I have superglued small Wall plugs into stripped screw holes before to-day? Trim it flush and screw up tight.
