has anyone had or used a 2.5 kva Honda go 160 no frame stephill generator? It's use will be for 10 mins in the morning for running the hair dryer. If in trouble I would charge battery but it's mainly for the hair dryer. Just wondered if any good, did not want to spend a grand on a generator for a hair dryer . Cheers

Inverter is a no as not enough battery or solar, and I will let you suggest a crew cut to the other half you sound braver then me. Haha

One of these would be cheaper - and useful for cleaning around your pitch in the autumn:

Not long enough, but a little common sense helps..........
10 mins running will not replace what you take out with a 2000watt hair dryer. Recharge time can be approximated by dividing the amp hours to be replaced by 90% of the rated output of the charger. For example, a 100 amp hour battery with a 10 % discharge would need 10 amps replaced. Using a 5 amp charger, we have 10 amp hours divided by 90% of 5 amps (.9x5) amps = 2.22 hour recharge time estimate. A deeply discharged battery deviates from this formula, requiring more time per amp to be replaced.

If anything you are wasting fuel in the generator. Fit solar and a good inverter that way you will be more friendly to those around you first thing in the morning. The other half does her hair in the morning and I boil the kettle have TV on in background and heater when needed and all of batteries and replaced by solar or if we are moving on B2B fully charges batteries 30 minutes down the road. Simples.

The generator is just to run the hair dryer, not top up battery after using an inverter.

Topping up a battery does NOT charge it...........

Would love a generator like that just for the crack, big shiney chrome exhausts the lot.

A Battery to Battery charger and an inverter would be my advice. Together still cheaper than a genny, and will do a good job. No petrol to lug, no fumes and no upset neighbours

Siân would use a fully sized domestic appliance. through a 2000w inverter Whenever she used it I'd start the engine for a few minutes while a hair-dryer is used. This meant practically zilch will be taken out of our batteries, and a running engine on tick-over is nothing like a running genny, people hardly notice if at all.

I had that exact genny ... great bit of kit..

but it's a 'site' genny and very noisy

sold it to a builder ...

NB..

it is not inverter technology, so the output voltage can surge or spike on start-up and when going "on and off load" .. this can damage on-board electronics.. such as the van charger..

Can not do battery to battery charger now as of now we do not have an engine in the front. Only way is if it could be run from the car with connections like when you plug a fork lift on charge.

What about turning your blown air heater on (on gas) closing all the other outlets except the one she wants to use,, and then connect a "made up" hose to the one 'open' one and hey presto !!
I'll put in a patent I think !!

@Ivory55 I think the only answer for your "hair dryer" problem is to buy a efoy syste. Have a read:
http://www.motorcaravanning.co.uk/shopuk/efoy_fuel_cell.htm
It's really a fit and forget system other then buying the fuel.
Methanol is a VERY dangerous liquid and the EFOY system is NOT cheap..
Too rich for my blood I'm afraid. I will persevere with solar and Jenny can continue hanging her head out of the door or sitting in the sun !!
MUCH more preferable, but she does have short hair.

Don't you just love gennie threads:eek:

Just buy the biggest uncovered diesel genny you can find. Run it whenever you want and bugger the misreable old gits around you.
If they went skiing in the winter they'd have to put up with gennies like it or not. Ten minutes running a gennie to keep your better half happy No Problemo (y)
Seriously
We have an onboard 2.5 kva genny don't use it often but it's fantastic to have if you have the payload. We also have twin solar panels 360amp of batteries and a 2000 watt pure sine inverter so all aspects covered. With all that the gennie is rarely used nowadays but we do occasionally use it although we do try to consider our neighbours. :)

We use a very similar generator on-site, for powering a hot air gun (around 1600-2000w)
The generator can handle it but it certainly works hard... Also, as previously said, it's noisy, even at 10-15m away.

I did not say it was cheap............... but on the other hand buy it once use forever.
That's true I suppose......o_O
Tried that before, however. The wife wasn't cheap, and I only got to use it twice. After the second time, her RCD popped and never went back in.:cry::cry::cry::cry:

@Ivory55 do you have blown air heating? why not make a simple extension for one of the outlets to allow hair drying. Something like the hair dryers you see in camp sites in the shower areas. Just a thought.

I went down the inverter route for a (1000W) hair dryer and to be able to use a cheap 240v telly (which I have never switched on whilst away...). It'll draw around 80 amps, but that should be ok for a few minutes on a normal leisure battery (c100 amp hours). I do sometimes carry a suitcase genset for emergencies, but tend to tour with the van so charging is rarely an issue.

Alternatively, how about a gas powered hair dryer? Quick google reveals many around...

Hi.
Christy Towel ? Light, noiseless and cheap'ish, but the best bit.... You can dry off the growler as well, after a walkies in the rain.Thousands of other uses, even stopping rattles that occur from the glass lid on the hob, fold and insert, sorted.
