Pet Vaccine

Was told by vet that if thr rabies vaccine was one day late we would have to start again. Hope this helps but maybe it was not the rabies jab you were talking about.

Rabies you deffo can't go over the date.

With my old dog I was 3 to 4 months late for boosters and this was acceptable, someone once told me it was better for the dogs system as 12 months is too soon.

sorry harvey.....i should have made it clear i meant the normal annual vacinations.

its all a rip-off anyway.

who amongst you has an annual MMR jab or an annual Tetanus jab..(unless your job dictates otherwise) or any other annual jab come to that....and dont say flu jab:Doh:

surely dog vacines can be developed to last 5 or 10 years but then, the pharmasutical companies wont do that will they.

has anyone ever carefully removed the label on pet medication?

we had eye drops for our jack russell and under the label it said...." remove contact lenses before use"
same dog has an alergic skin reaction to grass pollen.....the supplied drugs were 'Peritin" re-labeled for the dog world and four times as expensive.
i reckon 90% of them are human drugs re-labeled for pets.

I think you are right, our vet advised us to give our yorkie half a piritin morning and night for his allergies. Our old yorkie was on the same heart medicine as I am on, but unfortunately it only worked for 25 days before she died in her sleep.

The usual injections can (I think) be renewed at any time. The rabies (which is two years after the first injection, then three years) must not go over the date in your pets passport or you will definitely have to start again with an injection; a blood test and a 6 months waiting period before you can bring them back into the country.

We are going through this process at the moment, so - according to our vet - this is the correct procedure and the time between injections

Hope this helps

Hi pappajohn,
We just had our 3 dogs vaccinated to go into kennels for our France trip at short notice due to late changes
The vets said the required time the kennels need is two weeks prior, and luckily we had 1 day spare, our vets on knowing the age of our dogs, did ask how late are their vaccs regarding just giving them the booster jab, not sure how long they were thinking, but definitely more than a month or two

I paid £34.50 each, I had asked the kennels prior if the vacc time was acceptable, reply was two weeks was fine...check if you need the kennel cough vacc for the kennels you are leaving them at ...thankfully the kennel we used did not need it

Hope sorted soon for you

our vet is a little particular when it comes to dates:Sad:

and yes, they do need kennel cough vacinations.

looks like i'll be on me own again at malvern unless step daughter #3 's palm is crossed with silver and she will stay here with them for the weekend:RollEyes:....yeah right!!!!

Best to check with your local Vets as we have had conflicting advice. We have normally had our dogs booster no later than a month after the due date. It's the Rabies booster you have to watch carefully, make sure its' BEFORE the due date otherwise you will have to start all over again with blood samples etc. and have to wait a further 6 months before you can bring the pet back into the UK.

I always used to leave vaccinating our hounds to around every 14 months, but they never went in kennels anyway. Vaccination periods are a little like sell by dates, not exact. I did leave our old dog for two years as she hates going to the vets and she was not that well at the time it was due, then they offered an amnesty... start again for the single price! So she had two very swift and stressful visits to the vets.
Which brings me to the last time I was in the vets, a couple of weeks ago paying a bill (over £100 for our cat to be put to sleep at home, we all want to die at home after all), I saw leaflets, once again offering an amnesty, it is not just at my vets either so it may be worth asking, if your dog does need to start the innoculations again, whether they are doing the same offer. Hope that helps, Jane

Sorry, just noticed.. you have been. The overdue bit seems to have been no problem then :)

its a two vet practice and the one we saw today doesnt seem quite as strict as the other vet...:thumb:

he had to muzzle one of the jacks to avoid being bitten while administering the kennel cough stuff into the nose so he may be a bit more particular next time.:Eeek:
