Just in case anybody is contemplating this for the first time, don't have the near heart-failure I did when I found that it was going to cost me 44 Euros to get across the Gironde from Le Verdon to Royan.

By the time I got there it would have cost me more to go back down the estuary to Bordeaux to cross the river.

The crossing took about 20 minutes - probably the same distance as would cost about a tenner in Greece (although admittedly it felt about a thousand times safer!).

Live and learn...........

I did that crossing about 12 years ago in an artic. They had to leave both side ramps down because of the length of the rig but nobody seemed to mind, especially me.

When I arrived and saw the ferry:Doh: I had visions of having to back track and drive all the way around but! :winky::shout:

Check the Cal Mac ferry fares for the Scottish Isles if you want to see expensive..

Largs to Cumbrae .. takes about 10 mins CAR + 2 people is about £35 .. :Eeek:

same here some great wild camping down the long coast::bigsmile:

Yes I agree - really enjoyed the trip up, and the spots we were able to stop in, and yes, it added to the holiday experience even if it subtracted from the budget!!

Didn't cost me a penny but the boss got a nasty shock.

Do they still use the ferry that you get on and off via ramps at the side?

Yes, they still load the boat from the sides. I bet it looked hilarious with your truck hanging off the sides! I've attached a couple of piccies (I think!) to help bring it all back...

Brilliant TDH, that's the one I was on but I remembered that it was green.

Hope you don't mind me saving them. Thanks a lot.:thumb:
