Just had van serviced chieftain tag 2.8 fiat service Fine BUT needed new turbo only done 16000 miles anyway off to France March so thought might as well have a remap while its in then they phoned up clutch is fine but would not like to remap as it would probably kill the clutch within three months so now looking to have new one fitted anyone know the cost please been quoted £650

no idea how much it should be, but parts and fitting sounds decent enough price

I am more interested in the turbo, having just been told part alone is £1400 + VAT for my Mercedes Hymer, fitting is adding about the same again due to access, your clutch sounds positively cheap

At £650 snap there hands off. Cost best part of £1200 for a dual mass flywheel and clutch on our 3.0ltr ducato comfortmatic.

Do you really need a remap?

Who said it needs a new turbo at 16000 miles? They should last a lot longer than that 100000 is more like a minimum. Do you rev it and the stop the engine to starve it of oil? Get a second opinion from a turbo specialist BEFORE going for it.

Just replaced clutch on my 2.8jtd (not a duel mass) £85 for Valeo clutch, £30 for a slave cylinder. Full days labour for fitting.

I think what they are saying is doing a remap may put to much strain on the clutch...
From previous threads on this engine / transmission it seems the clutch is a weak spot. So asking it to cope with extra power and torque could make it slip and eventually fail.

Without physically examining the clutch components it is not possible to say how good or bad the clutch is. It is possible to load test a clutch by putting it under undue and not normal strain but doing so is not advisable as it could bugger it.

In short the garage are probably just covering their arses as they wont want you complaining if the clutch goes after a re map.

2.8 jtd had mine done by mr clutch £400
been remaped pulls much better. Looked at a hd cover but for what ever reason no such thing. remember to drive lightly in low gears or spin wheels

Had mine remapped 170bhp, clutch did slip very occasionally but still drove to Spain and back, just had new one fitted. 60,000 miles on clock.

I agree, it shouldn't need replacing unless it has been abused or starved of oil.

Always idle the engine for a few minutes if the engine has been working, for example after driving on a motorway or in hilly country. I don't know the engine but if it has one they need to replace the oil feed pipe if the turbo is to be changed. It could be clogged with frazzled oil.

[edit] the clutch on my old hymer was about £650 including having the flywheel skimmed for balance, although I would doubt that this compares with a more modern vehicle[/edit]

A remap can be done to eliminate flat spots that are there due to emissions or noise regulations . any gains in bhp can be regulated with your right foot , therefore not spinning the wheels or slipping the clutch .
When the time comes , change a dual mass flywheel with an ordinary one . A driver of a new merc sprinter I know has had 3 clutches under warranty , now replaced with a solid one by merc themselves .

I dont think people here will be spinning the wheels ! Slipping the clutch perhaps ...
It is possible for a clutch to start slipping under load when in gear and without the pedal being depressed at all. A case of the torque being more than the grip of the components. IE the driven plate starts to loose its grip on the flywheel due to too much load.

I am all for re maps as they usually give a far better drive experience but it does seem that the clutches on this particular set up are at the limits with no tuning..

Solid clutches are brilliant on some vehicles but horrendous on others. On some it can mean a heavier pedal and or a less smooth take up due to the way a dual mass flywheel absorbs vibration. But it really does vary from vehicle to vehicle.
