The first number is North and the second one is the East or West depending if you are to the right ( E ) or the left ( W ) of the Greenwich zero degree line.

It is unusual if the co-ordinates do not stipulate E or W. I have seen on occasion the West setting referred to as a negative number, but IMO it is better to be sure and use E or W as appropriate.

Phil.

Surely, Phil - the first number can be North or South depending on which side of the Equator you are on?

Probably won't bother Road Runner too much unless he is on route to Australia!

So it's north south?

My dad was in the signals ion the war so knew all about mapping but left it to late to ask.

John

Lat and Long is the same whichever direction you quote.

Latitude is always North (but if you go below the Equator it is a negative number)

i.e 52 degress 13 minutes 45 Seconds North - or decimal -52·1854 which would be South of the Equator

Longitude is always East

i.e 52 degrees 13 minutes 45 seconds East - or decimal -52.1854 which would be West

It is the minus sign which counts as the other half of the World!
