Hi everyone,

We were just ready to set off to Pickering last night - despite the appalling weather - very keen.
When... the van refused to accelerate. The speedo needle went right over to 160KM/H and the gears refused to engage. also when pressing the throttle pedal the engine did not rev up. i.e nothing happens.

This morning my husband started the engine up and whilst in park the engine would respond to the pressing of the throttle pedal, however as soon as he engaged eiyher drive or reverse, the engine would not respond to the throttle pedal. A slight movement was felt when engaging the gear but a soon as any load was applied to the throttle pedal there is no response and the engine will not rev up again.

We have checked the transmission fluid levels and have travelled over 250 miles since we purchased this with no problems.

The throttle pedal is connected to what appears to be an electronic control and not a mecganical linkage or cable. The van is a cummins deisel chevrolet 6.5 cc with allinson gear box. it says something in the chevy truck book we have that certain models have differing accelerator controls but - althoug my dear hubby is usuyally very good with these things he has not come accross this before.
........ HELP:

Lynne and paul

Your accelertaor system is fly by wire, check all connections on pedal and engine also ecu and any gearbox speed sensors you find on the gearbox, you could try disconecting thye battery for a couple of mins and re conecting in case its locked in a fault mode
you may need a scan to detect any problems, failure of the speed sensor and or ecu is also possible, you wont get a lot of help remotly due to te complexity of these systems, scanners and hands on is the only real way

Hi ,
many thanks for advice. My dear hubby serviced all the battery terminals last week and it was ok before that - do you think this would have had any effect. He has gone to disconnect batteries to try your suggestion about that .
Once again thank you

No he hasn't left any off! at least he won't admit to it!!!:winky: and taking off and replacing hasn't helped except it is now erratic rather than not working at all! certainly not up to going to pickering today at the moment.
So much for our freddie starr tickets!
Looks like we might have to get a mechanic to look at it for us. but thanks for your help

if he has had the batterys off
and the vehicle is attempting to drive is he brave enough to take it out round the block, some systems have to re learn there processes and this can somtimes be done by just driving it, if its not looking like it wants to move at all, dont try that

Hi,
Might be difficult to go round the block - we have it parked on our front garden and live up a narrow lane which is only just wide enough to get it thorugh. If it gives up the ghost half way down our neighbours will hang us out to dry cos they wont be able to get out either. Paul is checking the connections and any friendly neighbourhood mechanics he can find would be very useful.
Failing that we will have to call out someone who knows about these things up in Doncaster unless you have a mobile service or know of anyone who does.

Cheers Lynne.

You could give Duncan a call see add on front page, I dont thinkits the the sort of thing he would want to call out to, as its very specialised, and can be very time consuming I dont think your run of the mill Mechanics going to be much use either, but Ive been wrong before plus Duncan may have a couple of tricks up his sleeve he usually does:thumb:

Hell, it's worth walking for that.

You might be right after it took us nearly three hours to get to pickering via the york bypass with a ten mile + tailback from the A64 And we only live in Doncaster!!!! normally a one and a half hour trip at a leisurely pace.

Well never mind we did eventually get here and the weather is now glorious.
Time to relax and unwind.

Thanks again to Geo. My hubby managed to reset the ECU by going backWards and forwards on the garden - ruined the lawn but the Van works now so why worry about it. It looks like the uncoupling of the battery last week caused the problem - he didn't leave a terminal off but must have upset the ECU somewhat but it did evetually rectify after we followed your advice so thanks very much. No problems on the way up here anyway, so fingers crossed.

We had a chat with the nice man at Star Spangled spanner who says that this van IS a turbo diesel if it has a fly by wire accelerator which it has. We had been told it wasn't by the seller. And it (normally) goes like the clappes and is not at all sluggish like some old buses.

Great advice thanks ::bigsmile:::bigsmile:

The number of times I've told myself that !!

I can help myself, I like things RIGHT and I can't stop myself taking things to pieces to see what makes them tick.

Our house and garage is full of things he keeps promising to fix or use or might come in useful one day.
Hubby was a marine engineer and likes to get rid of the rust because it caused holes in the boats - not good for oil tankers!!!

Hilldweller - just like my stepson he takes everything to bits to see how they tick!

Ah, you must be so proud, living in a MAN's house.

My daughter doesn't even have a compressor, now what kind of house is that ?

I don't think proud is quite how I would describe it really......!.......Frustrated, crowded......

Considering calling "from Trash to Cash " but I can't stand Lorne Spicer!

My lovely daughter sends anything she isn't currently using up to our house because hers is tiny .... but very tidy!
