In the conservatory we have a big television
It has not got a USB port on it
That means ( for instance ) I cannot hook up any of our hard drives with films on them

I know dongles like Chromecast etc plug in to the HDMI socket and note that they have a USB socket on them.. Which I presume is used to supply power to the dongle ?

Is there anything I can get that will allow me to plug USB drives etc in to them which I can then in turn plug in to the telly

The TV in question is a 54" Samsung that has all the usual sockets apart from USB
It was bought just before USB became de rigueur

Plugs into the HDMI. There is a USB cable on the other end to plug into a USB Power Source, either from Tv or a Mains USB Supply.

In all honesty I think I am proly chasing fairies.. I doubt there is anything or any way I can do what I need to do..

I just thought there would be something out there that I could use but it seems not

You will need some kind of converter which is what the media player does.

The HDMi point on the TV is passive - it can only see a signal being fed in

You should be able to get up and running for 20 quid or so.

I assume it has a network connection either wired or WiFi, you should be able to connect to your network and view films from any PC. Can be a bit awkward to set up, our Sony will only connect to PC with MS media player and you have to enable certain settings in media player. A quick Google usually sorts it out.

I,ve put a 2Tb drive in mine for storing films tv series photos etc.comes with a remote.
There is a small one to take an external hard drive via a usb with hdmi to connect to the tv.

In all honesty I think I am proly chasing fairies..

Raspberry Pi will do it for under £30, needs a bit of effort. It's native output is HDMI, it has USB inputs and there is a standard download of a media centre you can load on it.

Lookup mx pro on eBay if not already sorted.
Will turn TV into a smart Tele via Kodi app (needs WiFi or Ethernet for the web ) and plays USB devices.
