This from one of the road safety sites:

  • If it is safe and you have one, put a warning triangle or other permitted warning device on the road at least 45 metres (50 yards) behind your broken down vehicle on the same side of the road. Always take great care when doing this.

Hi
I am not sure about the correct distance, I would place two around 100 Mtr's apart and from the Mo Ho, giving a 200 Mtr total distance, also don't forget the High Vis Jackets. Pete

Then you may get ticketed for incorrect positioning in Spain....they'll give you a ticket for anything if it will boost the coffers.

M/way = 50mtrs and 100mtrs behind the casualty vehicle.
2 lane roads = 50mtrs behind and 50mtrs infront opposite side.

This is part of my OP, with which a number of the membership took exception. The information is accurate, confirmed by personal visit to the Guardia Civil and is the law in Spain.

First thing. You must have two reflective warning triangles AND enough reflective jackets for all who MAY need to vacate the vehicle. If not enough jackets are available then anybody vacating vehicle without one must leave roadside to point of safety.
Second. If on motorway/dual carriageway then one triangle must be placed 50 metres behind car and the other 100 metres behind car.
Third. On roads with two way traffic one triangle must be placed 50 (ish) metres behind car (more if near bend), the other the same distance in front of the car but on the opposite side of the road facing oncoming traffic.

Not long enough, but a little common sense helps..........
What Bryan has stated is fact, however if your Spanish you don't bother............ Today we watched a Spanish man and his wife fixing a flat on the side of the N332 ( a very bad road for accidents ) whilst the 3 kids sat in the back. When police arrived they did nothing other than directing traffic around them. Job done they drove off one way and the police the other. I guess the police thought not going to get much of a fine from these lot........

I can't speak for Spain but that isn't the case in France.

My brother had quite a bad crash a few years ago ( with my daughter in the back:xsad:) and when the cops arrived they weren't concerned about triangles, vests etc , just the safety of those involved and other road users.

I would expect Spanish police to be the same in most cases.

Not talking about the tragic road cases @Chris , and I think you know that, but the routine minor breakdowns which we have all faced. In such, minor cases involving foreign drivers, (foreign plates that is), speeding, jumping lights and traffic infringements, drivers are routinely escorted to an ATM to pay "on the spot" fines.
So, I repeat....... You have been warned.:xgrin:

I do appreciate that.

Just checking Google translate , if a Spanish cop has a go at you for missing a triangle or two just say:

No tienes nada mejor que hacer ?

Oh! That is sure to avoid a fine. Wonderful advice, would you say it in UK? Think not.

Bryan

PS: for non Spanish speakers, this poster recommends asking the Guardia "Have you nothing better to do"

I would say it actually.

And to you I would say - lighten up.

with which a number of the membership took exception.

Exception, not really Brian. Rather just suggested that in my opinion it's a stupid law that asks people to put little triangles out on motorways. and in this instance the UK have it right. And for me at least its the risk of a fine for not doing so is the much lesser risk.

What do the Spanish Police want you to do if you've broken down and you're in the fast lane of the motorway. Walk 50, then 100m into live traffic I suppose.
