Hi All,

Could do with some help on this.. My 1994 Hymer 654 is to put it bluntly poo in the mud, I gather it will be the same in snow... with that in mind.... what tyres are favoured by you lovely peeps on here?

I have been looking at the michelin agilis alpins mainly because of both wet and economy ratings...

Am I better getting an "All Season" tyre like the new michelin cross climate (if i can find the size) or just run winter tyres all year?

I camp in fields a lot and would like not to just wheel spin when trying to get on and off lol... or at least have a little more traction...

Any help would be fabulous!

Plenty on here sing Hancook m&s tyre's praises, I fitted Toyo H09's which are a winter tyre that I run all year. I've only done 15k miles in three years and the fronts have worn a bit, but I'm expecting at least another 10k out of them and at £83 a tyre I'm happy with that. Not been stuck in any fields since we got them.

Once your tread has filled up with mud it doesn't matter what tyre you have on but someone will be along to say it does. :)

Have you considered some form of training? I generally find that when other people are slipping and sliding and wheel spinning all over the place, I manage to drive away with very little wheel spinning. I have manned grass car parks for charity events where you find that some people will give it loads of throttle and drop the clutch and then wonder why the wheels spin and the car digs itself into the ground. Other people just drive away with little or no wheel spin at all.

I think gently does it is the best way and the tyres tread design can do what it's designed for. I doubt M & S tyres would be designated that if they were not suitable or gave better performance than standard tyres.

fabulous.. thanks for the info

I'm not a heavy footer when it comes to mud where possible 2nd gear and low revs...

Just need some new tires that will give better grip in the mud - the hymer I have is FWD and not as much weight over the front as the back so slips n slides on the hankooks that are on (although they dont have much of a tread left)

Hi All again...

Ok I have found a couple of tyres that may be worth it..anyone comment? Also could anyone explain if going down to a 113 from a 116 on the front will make any difference?
Also has anyone run winter tyres all year? bearing in mind I dont use the van all year probably do about 5k at the most but some winter driving.

£107 delivered... still need to get them fitted and balanced

http://www.oponeo.co.uk/tyre-details/michelin-agilis-alpin-215-75-r16-113-r#95912153

116 versions £111 still need to get them fitted and balanced

http://www.oponeo.co.uk/tyre-details/michelin-agilis-alpin-215-75-r16-116-r#96376664_reviewslist

Then the michelin agilis camping (113) are £127 at dexel.co.uk fitted with balancing..

Would winter tyres be good all year? I rarely go over 60mph lol

Any help appreciated

There is no reason at all why you shouldn't use winter tyres all year round except cost, they are generally more expensive to buy and they don't last as long but if you can overlook this then it makes perfect sense.

Don't know where in the UK you live but my son in law has a tyre fitting business near uttoxeter and would fit them very reasonably and has a shed large enough to get any vehicle in.(y):)

Sadly i'm in South Yorkshire :)

Hi thanks for that... They are £16 cheaper per tyre than the camper versions and i can get them fitted for £10 per tyre so would be £12 cheaper as only fitting 2x on the front....

Still got some time to work it out.. might just plump for the michelin camping ones.. M&S rated might be good all years..

be careful if deciding on 113 as that is the max weight per tyre and you have 116 which take more you need to check axle weights to find out if they are suitable I can't remember the tyre codes but it is important.

I fitted Hankook RA08s to the work Ducato (2.0 litre SWB) earlier this year to replace the Good Year Cargos that were on it. THE GYs were awful and would slip even on dry grass. Last Sunday we visited a local farm shop and had to use their "extended parking" which is a field that slopes gently up away from the road, got in with no problems but when we came to leave I had to reverse up the field to get out, I did suffer wheel spin but where the GYs would have just spun and got nowhere the Hankook's more open tread was able to self clean so they still found traction and I was able to get out under our own steam. Fitted some Good Year "Ultra Grip" to a customers van last week and they look the business with a really quite aggressive and open blocky tread pattern but I obviously can't give any feedback on off road or winter conditions performance.

if that was true why do motorsports that run on mud bother using them rallying autograss etc
It is true but ........... purpose-designed winter & M&S tyres have a more open and deeper tread which allows more tread flex to keep them clear. They also use a softer rubber compound for better wet grip.

Been running on Continental Vanco 2 winter tyres for several years now and only got stuck once when a site we were on flash-flooded (no rush, waited 24hrs and got off okay). Apart from that even sloping slippery grass has been no problem - and they saved me from a nasty a week or so ago on a damp motorway when an idiot cut close in in front of me and slammed his brakes on when he realised he had nowhere to go............. Thankyou Conti and ABS!

As for mileage, yes they do wear a bit quicker than ordinary tyres, but it's not significant and for most they will be replaced due to age rather than tread depth. I recall getting about 30000 miles out of a front pair, the second are just in need now of replacing, along with the rears at 60000. Actually the rears are only going to be replaced as they are over 5 yrs old.

Been browsing the net for prices and found I can get a full set at £90 each, including fitting so I'll stick with what I know.
