Travelling south to the Costa Del Sol in January/February. Santander or Bilbao, what port do you like to depart from at this time of year? or does it matter?

Plymouth/Santander is the shortest crossing to Spain, which could be a useful thing if it's rough! .

I prefer the journey out of Santander but if arriving late I prefer Bilbao because you can settle down for the night at the port.
Perfect for an early morning start. Santander does not have that facility but no tolls until the Madrid Ring Road.

@TM59 I prefer Santander when heading South and want a quick journey. Toll free motorway all the way from Santander to the Costa del Sol.

If the weather in Spain is bad, is one affected more by snow than the other?

No i don't think so..You are liable for snow en route to Burgos from either ports. BUSBY.

Have a look at the timetables and decide what time you are happy to arrive and which boat you prefer to travel on. The BD is the Economie ship, whereas the other is the Cap Finistere which is a decent boat. I don't think one port is any better than the other, though for arriving late there is a good Aire at Cabarceno only about half an hour from Santander.

Is it better to travel via Burgos or via Tordesillas? Both have decent campsites.

Depends purely on time of arrival or departure.
If arriving in January after 4pm it's going to be dark (or almost) so Bilbao cos you can park up and sleep on the dockside and get an early start in the morning.
If it's a morning arrival, Santander cos you can get on the toll free motorway South quite quickly whereas Bilbao you would normally go via the toll motorway for the first major stretch.
If it's a morning departure, Bilbao because you can sleep the night before on the dockside. If it's an afternoon or evening departure Santander.
This year we are sailing out in January to Santander (morning arrival) and back from Bilbao (morning departure). The difference in cost is minimal but convenience rools!

Arrivals Jan/Feb are: Santander - 12.45; 14.15; 17.30. Bibao - 07.45 (2 night voyage); 14.15 (All Spanish time)
Allow at least an hour for disembarkation, less if you're lucky. Personally, I prefer a few hours or more of daylight to get under way and not have to drive in the dark.
