Abbey Wood Caravan Club site .... it really is fantastic. How do I know? It's at the top of my street and we store Elvis (our MH) there. It's like an Oasis in the middle of a built up area, a really beautiful site, and helpful wardens and all the things you would expect from a Club site.

Best of all,trot down the hill (bout 10-15 mins) and you have a small row of shops and the train station, 20 mins to London Bridge station, extra 5 mins to Charing X , Cannon St & waterloo. return ticket is about £5. Greenwich en route too. Last train from London is about 12.30ish but there is a night bus (£2!) and this goes all night & the stop is less then 5 mins walk from the site.

I think it's a great site and so close to central London (& all the tubes) by train... I should know, I live here!

Give it a try and spend some quality time in good old London town too!

LEZ mmmm

LEZ is not an issue as far as I am aware, unless you have a MH like a truck.... I wouldnt be able to drive mine home if it was .... it will be in the future though, unless MH owners start to lobby Mayor Johson (unless you want to avoid the M25 in the future... best of luck!), he has already delayed it for a few years so get lobbying!!!

Hi from the LEZ site:

The Low Emission Zone (LEZ) affects older, diesel-engined lorries, buses, coaches, large vans (exceeding 1.205 tonnes unladen weight) and minibuses (over eight seats plus the driver's seat and below 5 tonnes).

Cars, motorcycles and small vans (under 1.205 tonnes unladen weight) are not included in the LEZ
It also affects other specialist vehicles that are derived from lorries and vans, including motorised horse boxes, breakdown and recovery vehicles, refuse collection vehicles, snow ploughs, gritters, road sweepers, concrete mixers, tippers, removals lorries, fire engines, extended-cab dual purpose pick-ups and some light utility vehicles. Motor caravans, ambulances and large hearses (over 2.5 tonnes) are also included.

Abbeywood is inside the LEZ so as far as I am aware older motorcaravans are effected.

Simply go here: http://lezlondon.tfl.gov.uk/lez/vehicles/default.aspx and put your details in and it will tell you if your ok or not.

They didn't have that much security round Greenham Common when it was full of nukes. Though I have to agree with you, nice inside but what hell must it be like to live outside when they are so determined to keep the outsiders out.

The three pounds odd day rail pass is a real bargain.

We visited London earlier this year and stayed at the C&CC site at chertsey, very easy to get to but a 20 min walk to the station and then 1 hour on the train into town.

How easy is the approach to Abbey Wood bearing in mind we live in the north and either use the M6/M40 or A1/M to get down your way.

The C&CC site was okay but it seems the CC site is much closer in.

Hi Bill, we normally go M25-A2-A221 its sign posted after that, only Knee hill is a little tight for an RV, thats the last bit before you turn off for the site. RV's are generally stuck over on the lefthand side, which makes it unlikely you sat will work because of the trees, but all the pitches have a TV point. 3G internet is good, or you can use their expensive wi-fi

Train times aren't much different, as it stops at every station down to Charing Cross.

We've stayed at Abbey Wood a couple of times. January last year and January this year.

From Teesside we use the A1/M11 to M25 then A2 and follow the directions in the CC handbook (avoids the tight bit on Knee Hill which Olley mentioned).

Can confirm trains are great for geting into town. Our experience is they run pretty much to time and have been pretty clean. The Day Ticket is a good alternative to the return if you intend using tube/DLR/buses.

we used to like staying on the crystal pallace site, expensive but handy for the odd few nights once a year,

but of course we are not welcome inside the M25 anymore due to our motorhome being one of the 'nasty' old diesels,

so instead we stay on one of the sites outside the LEZ, waltham cross was the last one we stayed on, really liked that one, no bog block, so it was about £3.50 a person a night... C&CC so no pitch fees, so 7 quid a night for the 2 of us, 1/2 mile walk to the train station, then half an hour into london.

last time we took sams scooter with us, so we went into london on that, and deliberately went in and out of the congestion zone as many times as we could, just because we could for free on the scoot... we burnt a lot more fuel and produced a lot more polution taking the scooter into london 4 ot 5 times a day than if we had been allowed to park the van up on the crystal pallace site, and use the tube/busses from there.

Just got back from a weekend at Abbey Wood, been there 5 times before. Very nice site with helpful wardens.

This time we went East towards Chatham, trains very good and reasonable.

Going back up there in July for a longer stay.

It is London you know!

Hilldweller`s Stalag comment made us laugh, we went to Abbey Wood about 6 weeks ago, and were just about to pitch on an outside pitch when I noticed high wire fencing and an electric fence sign. We moved to be in the middle of the site with everyone else.

At the end of the day it is London, not some sweet little village somswhere so security is a must and should be appreciated - I moved from horrible, crime ridden Hastings to Abbey Wood 8 yrs ago and have never had any problems re crime here but am glad my Elvis is safe & sound at the Campsite.

Trains into town are regular and take max 40mins, normally 30-35 mins and not ALL trains stop at every station (I commute on them every day):thumb:

Yes, London is not for the elderly! Not many Bingo halls and Derby & Joan clubs!

Have they sorted out the power problems? I was there in October and the power kept tripping.
One of the reasons was a group of tuggers (NOT BIASED IT COULD HAVE BEEN MOTORHOMERS) had everything on in there vans,hirdryers, tv, hi fi ,lights etc and kept throwung the trips I was also on this line. All I wanted was a light!
It is a very handy site and the first time I went the approach made me think I was lost!
I have stayed at Chertsey and Walton on Thames,but never been able to book in to Crystal Palace.

We have stayed at both Abbey Wood & Crystal Palace many times. Found them both to be easy to get to from Eastbourne. I guess that due to more folk gettiung into the Motorhoming or Caravaning way, the popular sites are getting more busier. Was thinking that we should maybe try other CC and C&CC sites a bit further out (around the M25 ) just for a change But then they wouldn't be so conveiniant to the City.

Thanks for the Pics of the Abbey Wood Site. I live less than 3 miles away and have never even found where it was I can vouch for the trains as I travel on them most days. Not the fastest but normally on time.

We have used the site several times and also think it's great, lots of security cameras and barbed wire round the perimeter fences, is it really that unsafe in this area? Trains to London town are very frequent and with the day saver tickets which are good on the buses ,tube , light railway and main line trains make them very worthwhile:thumb::thumb:.
