Hi all,
Hope you've all had a great weekend away in your MH ,
We've just had our second trip away to Canterbury this weekend. Another great site close to city centre , very friendly and excellent bus service just outside campsite. Anyway we have been writing the mileage down when we've filled up and have worked out we are getting 22 miles to the gallon, is this what you would expect from a 7.5 meter, 2.8 Ducato TD ?

22mpg isn't bad for what is probably a heavy van with an earlier engine.

My guess is that's about right in the cold weather, average will be around 25 mpg but you have a large van and a big engine, on a windless warm day you will probably achieve 24-25mpg.

It's definitely been windy, bit shocked though as when we looked at reciepts first fill up cost 1.089 at Ramsey Huntingdon, second Thurrock at 1.209 ! Made a difference of an extra £6 so we will defo check out prices before filling in future

Use the torque and change gear around 1900/2000 rpm and only ever breath on the go pedal. You should get 28- 30 mpg

I'm sure my husband would understand that, but I have no idea what a torque is

Don't get too hung up on MPG - it can vary a lot and also if you start worrying about a few MPG either way then it will spoil your time away.

Drive sensibly and simply enjoy the trips away - it will be whatever it will be......

I do agree with you but just need to see how often we can go away before ending up skint

We also have Ducato 2.8 TD, slightly shorter van (just over 7.1m), 2013.
Our ambition is to get 30 mpg average over a trip and now that I've got Him Indoors to drive more steadily, we usually achieve it. Not every day - some are quite poor if any town driving's involved - but from here we have lots of dual carriageway and motorway if we want to get anywhere, so over a 2 to 3 month trip it evens out.
EDIT not an overcab bed! and we stay at about max 55 mph even on motorways. We take a pull from lorries when we can.

If we stay at between 55-65 on motorways we probably get 24 or 25 ish. ..(3 litre overcab)
Just put new tyres all round ... pressures re checked against weight .. Let's see if it helps.

The biggest factor is the right foot. I get about 25mpg out of our A class; those who claim 30+ mpg out of an overcab van may not be entirely accurate. 22-25mpg. Work on that and you won't be far wrong, happy travels

I get around 23mpg. 7.6m A Class 4 ton 3l Merc engine. It can go a bit higher off the motorways and if I put my foot down and cruise at 70-80 then a lot less. The most economical speed for a motorhome is often quite low, my best mpg would be if I drove everywhere at 30 but I think I might be cursed by other road users. Aerodynamic as a brick.

As you sure? The 2.8 was replaced in 2006 with the 3.0 Lt Multijet.

I have kept mileage/fuel usage figures for our last few MHs/campers and it is useful to see it improving or just staying the same, and I then know the best and worse to expect, if it then gets markedly worse though I'd know that something was amiss with it so would get it checked.

t do you call driving steadily, we will carry on checking to see what the average is, but have to say would like to get more miles per gallon, so we can afford to have a good time away

Yep same here have managed 30 mpg once but 25 seems to be the average, speed combined with strong head winds & cross wind are the enemy, strong wind and 70 mpg = 22 mpg or less.
In the overall cost of ownership it is a bit irreverent really, unless you are doing very high mileages which most aren't not many do more than 10k a year .

We go for a maximum 55 mph even on motorways, and take a pull from lorries when we can. Light on the pedal so no dashing out at junctions. I like to set the display to show what mpg I'm doing - it keeps me occupied on long straight drives! We don't do much urban driving, though of course some rural roads can be even more fuel-expensive than traffic jams.

Think I would go mad if he drove 30 all the time, mainly motorway today so averaged 60 mpg

A tank of fuel costs me around £80 or 80euros and one tank of fuel lasts about 320miles.

I just use this as a rough guide when calculating costs.

There's too many variables to be watching the mpg closely !

I find motorways the worst because I have to travel at about 60 mph to deter trucks from over taking me at + 1mph.
My best MPG is at around 50-55 MPH --- on the flat (Lincs & Norfolk + France)

But I do believe that moho is quite right

If you're budget-planning, then assume the cost will be much higher than you think it's going to be. Then you should have enough left over for [1] emergencies [2] visits to unexpected places [3] a nice little pressy for yourselves.
As others have said, try not to worry about mpg. We drive steadily not in the interests of economy, but because we're just not in a hurry. (You're younger so probably still working, so don't yet have the luxury of being able to take as long as it takes, and no return date in the diary...)
Though getting a good mpg is one of the games we play, and it is improving as we get more used to driving the van. I guess our driving style is based on "it's a lorry" so slow and steady, and it doesn't matter what other drivers think of that. It's my responsibility to get us where we're going in safety; theirs to do likewise for themselves.
Slower also means we can see more of the places we're travelling through, which is the biggest bonus.

Fiat Ducato 2.3, 150bhp. Autotrail Delaware, 7.9metres, 4.2 ton, over a 2100 trip, both the computer and the tank to tank worked out at 26.8mpg. Usual speed 56mph, cruise control rarely used.
Got the same on previous MH, 2.8 JTD 2005.

I'm with PoshDuck on this, fill it up, have max pleasure on your trip and fill it up again. Yes we do like to buy low priced fuel but we don't keep detailed records.

We have just completed trip to Benidorm towing a trailer and we averaged 24mpg, 2014 Autosleeper Broadway 130bhp 2.2 Ford engine.

Just wondering........... If I ran the van on @cruiser 's scotch, it would run forever....... very economical. You never see the level go down anyway............
