Here is a question for the experts. We have recently bought a tv with a built in decoder to work with an autosat system and whilst setting up, the display told us there was no CI information. The tv will take a card, is it something to do with this? What sort of card would we put in the tv. Thanks everyone.

Since 2008 & many years tugging
Common interface card, you pay a monthly fee for the card which gives you access to other channels like Eurosport, UK Gold etc.

Im sure someone more knowledgable will correct me but i believe the interface slot in the tv takes a card CARRIER, not a card directly.
You insert a 'pay to view' card in the CI carrier then insert into the tv.

The CAM is a small metal adapter, known as a Conditional Access Module that slides into the CI slot on a digital TV set. A CAM measures 10 x 5.5cm. The CAM has its own slot, into which you can slide a credit-card-sized subscription card.

It won't affect free to air or free to view channels. You will be able to watch all of those without a CI module.

Also I've been told, although I have no direct experience, that the modules for a couple of the popular 12V TV brands are "crap" and if you want to watch subscription channels you're better off taking your Sky box from home with you.

That all sounds great thanks for the info. We no longer have a sky box (couldn't find too much of interest to watch), what else is available and if anyone knows how much and where from that would be good.

If you put your dish up and do a scan all the channels you can receive will show up in your EPG. The ones that require a CI module will be encrypted when you try and switch to them - all the module does is decrypt the channels, the TV will receive them anyway. If you couldn't find anything to watch with Sky then you still won't. There aren't any different channels really.

You get a few different channels on freesat and free to air satellite which arent on freeview...but not many.
One or two of the freesat/fta satellite channels are the encrypted freeview ones.

Free to view channels on satellite require a viewing card.
FRee to view are channel that are available without a subscription, but do require a card... this is the "Freesat from SKy"service.
Only a handful of channels are free to view - like motors TV, LFCTV, Sony Movies....

You get a few different channels on freesat and free to air satellite which arent on freeview...but not many.

And there are a few channels available for free on Freeview, but are encrypted (ie Sky p[ay) on satellite - Watch, Gold, Yesterday, Dave....
