Low emission zones - Germany - advice (1 Viewer)

We are hoping to tour part of Germany just before Christmas including Cologne. However surprised to find that you must obtain a windscreen sticker ( Umwelt Plakette) confirming that the vehicle meets the necessary emission standards before you enter some cities (possibly to access a campsite). The stickers come in different colours which correspond to road signs. If your vehicle does not display the right colour sticker you can be fined 40 euros on-the-spot.

Thrown me a bit so can anyone offer further advice and guidance on this please ??

A few threads on here, search with umwelt, we spent 5euro at german tuv station, no inspection of van, we provided v5 and proof that it was euro 5 in form of coc ( certificate of conformity) which came with the van. The disc is fitted to windscreen and is not removeable and has no end date.

Have a look at this website and choose 'find schemes by country'. Don't bother to get a sticker before you go, it's cheaper once you are there (TÜV stations or a dealer for your base vehicle). You need the V5 as stated above.

May I be so bold, Germany has a superb public transport system that is very cheap. Find a site outside the LEZ and then use the fully integrated transport system. That's what we do in Munich, then both myself and my wife can imbibe!

Been a recent topic on Facebook M/H group.
As said sort out when you are there but you need something that states your vehicles Euro number..
Discovered a lot of websites that try and sell you one in advance at VERY inflated prices !! a €6 sticker for €80...

I don't think that one includes posting to UK? I think my link (official TUV website I believe) is 14 euros not sure but I got mine at a German car dealership

EDIT good link looks like postage to UK is covered.

Yes Andy - bought mine from here (twice) - €6 - that's the price including postage - and delivered in 3 days!

Got ours in Germany this year. 10 Euros it cost, because, said the chap, our V5 was missing lots of necessary information, which he spent about half an hour getting on-line.
"How can you people work like this?", he said.
And then the only LEZ we entered was Freiburg, for just long enough to discover the municipal site was full so we drove out again to a nearby Stellplatz.
And now we've changed the van.

Hi,
Purchased ours before 1st trip last year from this site - cost 12E so looks not the most cost effective but far better than the 'specialist' sites??
We have done 2 tours so far - 1st Mosel-Rhine-Romantic rout down to Alps and 2nd to Baltic coast-Denmark-Sweden and back via Schwerin-Potsdam-Harz mountains and Koblenz
What's there not to like about this welcoming country (other than their policy over immigrants, which even the locals do not understand?)

I spent some time with a very helpful TUV manager in Lingen (Lower Saxony) in mid-October. He looked at the V5 "Insufficient information", the MOT certificate "Insufficient information", the VIN plate "Insufficient information" and the engine block (which he cleaned in a number of places) "Insufficient information". He also made a couple of phone calls and eventually told me that mine was "Euro 3" compliant (I told him that at the beginning) so I could only have a yellow sticker (I told him that at the beginning).

He also said that things changed a couple of years ago and only green stickers were of any value: everywhere wanted Euro 4 engines and anything less was not legally admitted into the cities. He would sell me an orange one if I insisted but it would attract a fine wherever I went, so I may as well save my money. He then said "if you don't take a risk, you don't get any fun".

Fortunately I was able to avoid Umwelt Zones or take the special "exempted routes" to access the sites I needed.

IF I was entitled to a green one, I would buy one at a TUV centre, if only to give me peace of mind. All the Germans that I spoke with said they wouldn't bother. You pays your money and you makes your choice - Gordon

They must have a database with vehicle info on it. Last time I bought one (previous van) the scanned V5 was enough by postal method. Personally I get one before going as this is a slightly more complex matter than getting a vignette from a petrol station. And certainly don't want to be waisting time looking for a TUV station in Germany to save a couple of quid on postage.

Had a broken windscreen a couple of months ago, carglass couldnt get the green sticker off, can I simply get a replacement, I have the original German receipt and A4 sheet of information.

An Umweltplakette, no matter where you purchased it is valid throughout Germany.

And - yes Andy, a replacement disc (for the same vehicle) costs exactly the same as the original....inexpensive in the grand scheme of things!

Mine just arrived this week. I ordered from the TUV site at a cost of 12euros delivered and it only took a few days to arrive. It was delivered with the documentation in English saying I can pay 12euros by bank transfer of it I prefer I can phone a UK number and pay £20 by credit card.

I think my Metro bank account allows euro transfers without charge but if not I'll just phone and pay £20. I'm only going to Cologne for a long weekend and didn't want to muck about getting a disc locally or risk not getting one.

P.S. the disk lasts for the life of the vehicle.
