After reading all your postings regarding breakdown cover today I decided to phone the RAC to see if i was covered for my motorhome. No was the answer, they only cover up to 5 metres long, also height and weight make a difference. They asked if I was a member of the CC or C&CC which I am then they used the membership number to transfer the policy to a different sector, it cost no more and I get the same cover benefits although it took about half an hour to do the transfer. Paying £138 per year it still does not give me European cover, no that would be a separate policy at £108 per year or £10 per day.
I know some members recommend other assistance cover much cheaper and maybe one day I will look into it until then I am happy I now have full cover, especially as my van has no Jack should I get a softie. Guess I have been lucky so far all have remained firm (y) :giggler::giggler:

RAC was not suitable for me as their European cover only covers you for a maximum trip of 90 days for only one call out per trip.

The £108 fee give full cover for the whole year, no call out restrictions.

Who are you insured with?

Several of the specialist motorhome insurers include UK/EU breakdown cover with their policies. That's how I've always got my cover for the MH. They tend to use HGV recovery services so there won't be an issue with size.

The thing you have to be careful of using AA/RAC/Green Flag etc is that if you ever need recovering they are likely to send a vehicle that's not big enough to lift you. If you have a search you will find a few horror stories.

I am insured via Direct Line so they would offer Green flag. The reason for transferring the policy via a CC membership number is obviously to avoid the wrong recovery vehicle being sent, at least I hope so and hope never to find out.

Your European Breakdown Cover is for a period of:
1. 12 months under an annual policy
(maximum 90 day journey whether standard or
comprehensive)

Claims limit - 1 claim for
single trip, 3 claims per
annual policy

This is what I got from the small print so I rang them and they confirmed only one claim per trip, so I cancelled the policy within the first week.

You would think so wouldn't you. Don't count on it though. Like I said, have a search....

It's very telling that the specialist motorhome insurers don't use any of the "big name" breakdown companies.

I am sure your facts are correct swidy, being the fee would be on top of the GB only cover when I do eventually stray to foreign shores I will look at other cover, obviously I will ask the question on the forum.

I'm with Comfort.

£292 for insurance and full UK and European breakdown cover.
And mine at the same price.
Why have RAC or AA when it's all in at this sort of money? The only time we had a recovery on the last van, they sent the AA anyway!

Except is isn't. We're with Comfort as well; it is price capped and it uses RAC in Europe. They did not send an appropriate breakdown vehicle to us.

I have previously insured with "Safeguard" who use the AA and, now "Comfort" who use the RAC, both give full European cover and both cover our 4 ton 7.5 m motor home, I checked with both before buying their policies though, I have not had to call them out. As far as I can tell, both are specialist MH insurers and the RAC & AA "big name" break down companies.

Not what Comfort told me a couple of months ago when I specifically asked that question but hey ho. Never dealt with Safeguard so can't comment on them.
