Could be mistaken but think I remember reading that tag axle motorhomes were not welcome on some sites both here and abroad, if so why?
Cheers Keith

Lots of tag axles on the continent but never heard of any discrimination against them. It's generally the length of your van that restricts where you can park.

There have been reports of problems but I don't think it is widespread. Twin axle caravans have their own issues but with MHs I suspect it is the potential damage they can do when turning on grass.

We've never had a problem , the only frustration is the class 4 on the French toll auto routes, but 'c'est la vie ' !!

A general ban on tag axles in France was to keep the Itinerants off camp sites.. haven't heard of it in the UK.. and never had a problem when we towed a twin axle Lunar.. either here or abroad..

I don't know, so can't really comment.. we used plenty of municipal sites

I'm guessing when they see you are not a pilky they don't apply the rule ..

I have been caravanning for 32 years but in 2014 I have"gone over to the dark side"
Banning of twin axle caravans is quite common on some sites in France and Spain (as @ScotJimland says to prevent Itinerants swamping the sites) also a few sites in UK implement this ban - we know cos we had a twin axle caravan for 12 years!!

Never heard it being applied to tag axle MoHos though :)

Full lock turns rip grass to shreds just by the nature of one axle skewing sideways.

Many gravel surfaced goods yards forbid screw turns with artics for the same reason.

We have only ever paid class 4 once on the auto route.. Always press the button & tell them that you are a "Camping Car"... They always reduce it to a class 2.. Happy days.. Try next time you are over there, you will be surprised.

Lifting Axle?

Pete

now you mention it..

my twin axle Lunar Caravan had a lifting axle.. there were two hydraulic pistons on the front axle with a hydraulic hand pump in the gas locker only used it when I needed to manhandle it, made it easy to pull round on it's own length..

I think it was the only caravan ever to have this fitted

Whats wrong with PILKEYS ?

apart from the spelling ?

other than that, did I say anything was wrong with them .. ?

if the former.. we don't comment on spellings

if the latter, I have no control or any say in Municipal camp site rules.

Wish mine had that option Jim.
Even the twin axle mover struggles without a helping shoulder in tight turns.

I remember seeing them advertised (before movers were around) - at the time I had a twin axle Van Royce and wished it had that facility!!

I saw a really nice tag axle Mercedes van belonging to a member her and IT IS NOT FWD as it was built properly RWD like all lorries are so it should not get caught trying to pull away with the front wheels going around, but sod all else happening like the FIART one do.

We have a sanef 'tag' it always lets us onto the toll autoroute, but rarely lets us off. Many of the 'peage' toll booths have a weigh bridge built in. We always press the button and explain we 'class deux' but rarely allowed.
We are away again on Thursday, and will try taking a ticket , and then see what happens.....
