Hi Guys

Where is your favorite aire or campsite in Portugal?

We're heading there in April, looking for 'real' Portugal. Small towns, fishing villages.

Thanks for your input

Robert

We toured down the west coast from Galicia years ago....really enjoyed it but got more touristy as you head south. Some great spots on the way....memorable meals as well!:)

South Western tip at Sagres - spend some time walking around the Fort. You can overnight on the Fort's car park and it is only a short walk into town. But if you are lucky you might find a space over looking the little bay. GPS N37 00.374 W008 56.380. Only about 6 or 7 spaces for unofficial overnight parking. Walk up the hill 200 yards to a little beach type restaurant Mar a Vista, with a beautiful view of the sea and fresh fish.

15 or 20km North of Sagres is the small village of Carrapateira. Just after it turn left and head for the beach. Stay overnight on the car park (N37 11.554 W008 54.158), take your shoes off and wade across the little stream and you are on a large sandy beach.

Silves and its Aire near the swimming pool is good. Walk up to town and look at the Castle. Outside the gate is the Casa Velha Restaurant. At lunch time ask for the Menu Camper. 3 courses plus wine and a slug of Port to finish all for E7.50 each.

There is also a nice Aire at Castro Marim at the very Eastern end of the Algarve. Interesting little town. Walk up the to the Revetment and there is a tourist office there that will give you a free talk about its history. Nice Restaurant across the road from the Aire.

And you can't leave the Algarve without visiting Pedros. One of the most unusual and unique small sites we have ever been to. This spring we stayed over Easter and had the most fabulous traditional Portuguese Easter feast with Pedro and Mia as great hosts. So much delicious food to eat.

Also the best view I have ever seen in an Aire is at Monsaraz. Beautiful little fortified hill village and a views for miles. You will need to get there early as it fills up quickly. And also good Aires and unnoficial spots to stay at Elvas and Marvao as well.

Stayed for while here near Marvao.

Loved the site and area. Don't expect a Sunday roast and daily papers but for us it was just perfect. Hope to be there early next year for a while.

Shawn.

We found the 'barragems' great ... basically their fresh water lakes/reservoirs ... absolutely gorgeous!

Totally agree- this is barragem Pego do Altar - fabulous and there is a restaurant and a toilet/shower block just at the top of the hill.

The problem can be you may have to share your bit of paradise with many others from all over Europe. :D
But a fabulous place none the less.

Is Pedros in Campercontact? - can't seem to find it on google maps either, by entering the co-ordinates,
What town / village is it in?
Do they have a website?

Thanks

Rob, It is a site not an Aire, and Pedro is the name of the owner not the site. Not sure if it is in Campercontact but their website is www.motorhomefriends.com. Pedro is also a member of this forum. The nearest village is Paderne. Only 18 or so pitches.
Found it!

The problem now, is that I've got about 30 places I want to visit (none of the big cities either) and only 21 days to do it

Why only 21 days? You told me you had retired.:D When we did it in the spring we took a month door to door. Next time we go we will double it. But next spring may be Italy for us rather than Portugal after your tempting posts. So we should meet up and swap advice on places to see.

There is nothing much around Pedros to see, but it is a great place just to chill for a couple of nights, and he and his wife are just so welcoming.

Almost retired from my 'paying' job, but still 'on the payrol' as grandparents. We have to look after the grandchildren in the school holidays (dad's a single parent) we are limited to dates, more than length of visit.

Having said that we've already got the following trips planned for 2016 so can't complain really;
Portugal (April)
UK or Ireland (May)
Switzerland (June)
Greece (Sept)
Dordogne (October)
Spain (December)

Would appreciate 'swapping notes' over Italy and Portugal.
