I think I need new inner and outer sills on both sides of my Fiat Ducato panel van. Can anyone advise on a rough price I should expect to pay for supply and welding?

Thanks.

unfortunately that like how long is a piece of string question,
it totally depends on how bad the corrosion is on the panels that need welding too,
my advice get at least three quotes NOT estimates from companies that specialise in welding and make sure the repair is suitably chip coated after completion ,

Let's assume the body work is good. Any indication of price would be helpful. Even a range of prices would help as I am totally blind at the moment. I couldn't tell you if it was a £100 job or a £1,000 job.

Let's assume 2x inner sills = £200
2x outer sills = £200

2 days work @ £200 per/day = £400
Paint/materials/welding = £150

Estimate £950

If the new sills Have decent metal to weld too, and assuming you can buy the sills? your are probably looking at £100 per sill plus parts/materials, But plenty of times I have cut out sills and found extensive corrosion on chassis / floor that needed further work and metal, If I had quoted a all in price then I swallowed it and cried into my beer that night, if it was a estimate I would buy my mates a drink(y)
if you live up Noorth you may get a better price then us down south!
Labour wise,
and the northern lot are used to more corrosion since they put more salt on the road in comparison to us southern softies,

Holy crap... It is that big of a job? I thought it would take about an hour with an angle grinder to cut them off. Then another 2 hours to weld and fettle. And you day rate is very very cheap..

£400 just for the parts as well. I think I will just get them patched....

Many years ago, I had an old Bedford CF coachbuilt that failed its MOT for rotten sills and chassis. The repair quote was more than the van was worth.
I bought an arc welder for £30 and pulled an old fridge to bits then taught myself how to weld. :D
The MOT tester said it was the ugliest bit of welding he'd ever seen but it passed! (y)

I have a certificate that says I can weld but it has been 20 years since I did any welding... Not sure I could face lying under the van getting crap chucked in my face for 3-5 days it would take my inexperienced hand to do the job.....

£10 an hour? Which skilled person works that cheap?

My thoughts on the subject

Find someone who knows that specific job and has done it before - they should give you the best price and the best job as it should be done properly and by the quickest way

Find out how much if any deconstruction of the interior is needed for fire safety. It may save quite a bit if you do that deconstruction rather than pay labour costs

Deconstruction of the inside? I thought this was an exterior only job? That sucks if it is the case being a fulltimer deconstruction of the interior will be a major issue. Doable but not easy.

Deconstruction might be a good idea, 30 odd years ago I burnt out my Vauxhall VX 4/90 welding underneath it, to get it past an MOT.:cry:

Is it coming to the time for a change of van
Considering its full time ( condensation )
Seeps in and stays causing rust
In hard to get at places
I assume it's rusting out rather than in

Sometimes it's good money chasing bad

Listen fellas....
It's hard to call what's needed without seeing it.
If full inner sills and full outer sills are required then it's major surgery and from experience it's not worth doing.
I'd be surprised if a 05 Ducato needed that, more a few patches which is easy.
Get it to someone that knows, get an estimate of cost and time and go from there.
The main thing is if you make the decision to repair then it needs doing properly. Old rust completely removed, fully welded in new panels done properly, ground back, rust prevention applied internally and externally, primed, painted and lacquered and left done in such a way that it's not noticeable......
You must make the call if it's worth it and keep bearing in mind it's Geommets home.

Its a heat issue the steel on vehicles is thin and it depends on how bad the tin worm is therefore how close to the floor they will have to weld. Provided they can see the area they may just have a fire watcher inside but if there is a problem you may have a bucket of water sloshing around inside. You need to ask the question how bad and therefore how close to the interior panelling they will need to go.

Unavoidable I would think to avoid fire and damage....all in all its this that makes it a major job. The welding just part of it.

Realistically will have to stay elsewhere for a week?

This van has to last me at least another year maybe two while I save up for a new one.

Currently what I am seeing is one hole in the outer sill underneath the passenger door. I cut this back until I reached good(ish) metal that I couldn't tear away with my fingers or pliers. I then liberally coated it with Kurust a couple of times. Then filled and coated with hammerite.

The other problem I have seen is that the lowest part of the sills where they join as a strip is corroding and bits of it can be pulled off in small strips.

It is not at the fatal stage yet, so my plan was to replace it all before it was....

However if it is going to require me to take the inside of the van to pieces then I will have to just do a patch job and plan on replacing the van.
