Electric Blanket - Inverter (1 Viewer)

Would anyone have any experience of running an electric blanket through an inverter?

I’ve rang Dreamland and they say no, either with a modified or pure sine wave. Also rang Kampa, they simply didn’t know.

Any guidance appreciated.

As far as I am concerned a decent pure sine inverter is just the same as plugging into EHU, other than the available battery capacity issue.

I stand to be corrected by those in the know with electrickery.

I find sending the wife to Bed first works just as well.

Just looked at one Electric blanket spec and 140 watts on max so thats about 12 amps from your 12 volts, leave it on for 20 minutes to take the chill off and less than 5 ah gone, an hour or two of sun on a couple of panels in the morning and it could all be put back in before you are even out of bed.

Dont leave it on all night though.

Thanks, The Kampa blanket is rated at 230v/80w: http://www.kampa.co.uk/electric-blankets/snuggle-double - but don't know if it will run through an inverter.

I have 2 x 100ah batteries and 120w solar. So I am hoping I'm good - just need to find a blanket that will work.

Ha, had one for the best part of 40 years, just me and the mutt now and I ain't sleeping in a bed with him all night, he snores and is always chasing rabbits in his sleep

hot water bottle dos the job for me why put your battery's through all that stress motorhoming is camping if your a bit cold get a onesay
I like to save my battery's for more important things computer TV blown air hetting

I brought a 12 volt blanket for the bed over the garage, usually plug it in about 20 mins before stopping for the night,
it warms up the bed nicely but I wouldn't use it without the motor running ,
the good thing now is the missus doesn't clamp her self to me like in the alien sucking out all my body heat,

if you have the power then use it, does batteries no harm at all to give them some work. i hit mine hard most days with the toaster or microwave they are now 3 years old with no sign of a problem. Why pay out all that money and not use it.

A 'simple' blanket (without any complex controls) will work off any sort of inverter.

Being a soft southerner, I have been running a 65w Dreamland electric blanket off a Sterling pure sine wave 200w inverter for over 4 years with no problems. It's the blanket controller that needs pure sine. Mine's a 'Turbo' model which heats the bed up quickly so I only need to run it for 15-20 mins. The solar panels easily replace what it's taken from the batteries.

Sheepskin rug for me. No power needed. In extreme cases I would dig out my hot water bottles. But haven't needed them since the first two very cold winters I was fulltiming.

Why not go for a heated throw instead? I've got one and it's brilliant - I can use it at the front of the camper plugged into the inverter there to keep me snug whilst travelling or could put it on the bed instead - they are about 150w so not a massive draw. Below is an example of one:

That seems to be the trick from what I can understand. The Dreamland Inteliheat are to be avoided if using an inverter.

I decided to go for a Silentnight Essentials underblanket in the hope the electrics were simple and my 300w MSV inverter would run it OK. Find our tomorrow.
