I know this may be a common question but I can't find what I want to know clearly.

My MH is under the 35t limit, what is my legal speed limit??

I now know that all commercial vans, any size are restricted to 60mph, seems most white van drivers are unaware of this though but round our way at least they are finding out to their cost.

For a motor caravan, the important thing is your unladen weight, if you are under 3.05 tonnes, then speed limit is the same as for a car, if you are over, then you are on the lower limit of 50/60/70.

By the way, the limit for commercial vehicles (or goods vehicles) is under or over 7.5 tonnes.

MH limits are 30 60 70 and 70 if under 3.05 tonne

Over 3.05 it's 30 50 60 and 70

Commercial vans arent limited to 60, they can do 70 on motorways.

I am assuming you have missed a point out of your weight and it should be 3.5t
The only odd speed limit (which many are unaware of) is the one that applies to any vehicle over 3050 kg UNLADEN weight. Please don't ask me how to work that out.
This then restricts you to 50 mph on single carriageway roads. As far as I can see that will include us all with coachbuilt MH's
Apart from that I don't believe there is any difference from a car, e.g. 70mph on motorways and duel carriageways.
A motorhome is not a commercial vehicle so is not restricted by the commercial vehicle rules.

Interesting facts thanks Daniel, time to see what mine weighs then. I don't mind doing 70 as it feels fine but trying to stop 3 tons quickly is a different story.

Most Spaniards don't even realise that here,"furgons" , vans without any windows, are restricted to the same speed as hgv's. Merc sprinters seem to travel at around 160kph. :D

Nope just quoting the gov website that specifies the MH speed limits. But I did forget to mention the 3.05 is unladen weight.

And how many people don't know that the fast lane of a motorway has a 7.5 tonne weight limit and vehicles towing are banned from it?

Well I know I'm under this 3.05 as it only came in on a weighbridge a few months ago at 3.080 (max is 3.4). But the unladen is not shown on the vehicle anywhere so how would traffic police know if I were to be pulled over?

Why bother ?
An automated speed camera wont know you removed a few bits to take it under 3050kg and if you have a solar panel, bike rack or towbar that would have to be removed as well as any other FITTED extras.
I was thinking weigh it in running trim, fully loaded, then decide how fast you can go. Not that I've bothered, and frankly have more to worry about with potential gassing, wondering if I've got the best exchange rate and the right card, hoping I won't get stopped in spain using a sat nav and rear view camera, plus worrying about our electric bikes being legal or not.
Dare I put my table out on an Aire if every one else is,will I get my full 2Euros worth of water.
It seems so easy to complicate this wonderfully simple way of life !!

Certainly not the Jag that was pulling a caravan in the outside lane on the M3 at at least 90mph the other day!

Not on mine, it isn't. :)

Although it does tell me that I can pull a 3000kg trailer! (y)
Maybe not at 90mph down the M3 though. :(

Not on my V5. Only shows 'revenue weight' as 3300 kgs GROSS. No mention anywhere of unladen weight.

On my V5 it shows
(y) Revenue weight as 3500 kg gross,
F.1 Max. permissible mass (exc m/c) 3500
G Mass in service 1680

On the certificate of conformity issued by Bailey that came with the new MH it shows
mass of the vehicle in running order 3039kg
actual weight of the vehicle 3039
technical permissible max laden mass 3500kg

In the Bailey advertising blurb technical spec it states
MTPLM 3500kg
MRO 3042kg

MRO includes more things than Unladen Weight, so you will be well within the upper speed category band.

For example, MRO includes a 90% full fuel tank & a driver, while Unladen Weight excludes both.

As far as I am aware, UK speed limits for motorhomes is about the only instance where Unladen Weight still has any legal implication, although I think it may appear as a restriction on some car parks.

Not quite correct, if your motorhome is over 3.05 unladen weight, then you are restricted to 60 on a dual carriageway, motorways are the same as a car 70mph. The rules were in that link I posted.

Very confusing this our Exsis i698 shows on certain of conformity actual mass of vehicle 3082 KG
Mass in running. 2920 KG
GVW. 4250 KG
looks like I'm able to use car speed limits which is a surprise!
But on the V5 only shows revenue weight 4250KG= phgv

Totally confused, how is your MIRO less than the conformity mass?
