The engine light starts coming on in 3rd gear at around 2900 revs and as time goes by it happens in all gears. The problem is usually the waste gate sticking and is a known problem with the JTD.
Going uphill at full throttle is not possible as the engine management cuts the power when the light is on, so down changing and chugging up the hill is the solution.

If you go to a main dealer, the codes will show the problems as being;
Waste gate
Cam timing
Crankshaft timing

All of which can be costly.

However, there is a simple solution you may wish to try and I have had it done on my 2005 2.8 JTD recently.

The waste gate can be freed off but probably not at a main dealer (I have had very bad service from main Fiat dealers in the past).

Automotive in Louth, Lincolnshire 01507 600212 is a good place to start and they specialise in Turbo fixes. The job takes about an hour, so you can wait if you have booked an appointment and have travelled a distance.

I have no affiliation whatsoever with Automotive however having used them for servicing and tyres for the past 6 years, I am totally satisfied with their work, prices and professionalism.

I had the same issue with my 2004 fiat 2.8.After searching the forum I fixed the problem with a spray of WD 40 & a pair of mulgrips, took all of 10 mins.

i`m a newbie
Googled the problem and this was in the search list.
On my to do list before any trip next year (y) i think ive got a pic off a helpful funster somewhere, where the waste gate is located under the mh to oil and wiggle it loose hopefully sorting the power loss on hills and engine management light coming on at high revs on hills. ?

many many years! since I was a kid
penetrating oil works better than wd40, as the wd dries out quickly unlike the oil

Reach up from underneath, with the engine cold, or it is a painful job. Ask how I know

If it's just stiff I'm thinking soak it with wd40 first cos of straw easy to hit the spot then if wiggled loose oil or grease it after wd40 has evaporated ?

We had this done on our last service by local guy who has serviced our cars for years. Just got back from a trip up to Scotland and it was like chalk and cheese to honest. It drives so much better now - no ecu light and no limp mode if you don't get the revs right going up a hill.
