Can anyone help with whether the registered owner not being the main insured driver might invalidate any future insurance claims?
I'm the registered keeper of our MoHo at my address and am a named driver on other half's insurance policy that covers his car and our MoHo and who lives at his own address (0.01% of the time!).
Any thoughts or previous experience would be much appreciated :) x

As the registered keeper the onus is on you to insure the van.....even if you are named as an additional driver on your other halfs insurance.
I dont understand how other half can insure it anyway....only the registered keeper can get insurance.....its one of the first questions on a proposal form.

Thats my interpretation only and not neccessarily the law.

If I remember correctly, when applying for insurance, one of the questions asked is "are you the registered keeper" and as long As this was answered honestly there should be no problem. If it was not then you may not be insured.
Not an expert..........just my opinion.

To be sure you should ask the insurance company that covers the MoHo

No point in paying for cover that may not be valid

You don't need insurance to tax a vehicle anymore

No problem with you being a named driver, but if you are the main driver the insured must inform the insurance company.

Mmmmm? We didn't think of any consequence at the time when we were asked by the dealer as to whose name would be on the V5. Looks like we might have to register another change of keeper to put it in hubby's name just in case.
Will let you know how we get on.
Thanks for your input :) x

shouldnt be a problem other than you dont benefit from your no claims discount. There are also special rules for spouse or partner of the main driver/insured

be very careful of adding a motorhome to a multicar policy though as it will be limited cover not designed for motorhomes

I assume you have Documented proof of your statement......as i disagree.

If a vehicle isnt insured it MUST be declared SORN as there is no valid tax on the vehicle.
It doesnt have to be taxed to be insure but it has to be insured to be taxed.

We have our daughter as the main driver of Lorraine's car, she just past her test this year and will get her some NCD. We told the insurance company upfront that Sophie would be the main driver which she is and this was fine.

That isnt documented proof ! ?....thats you stating what you believe.
Can you point me to an official website which confirms what you say ???

....insurance and MOT are checked electronically by DVLA on the motor insurance bureau (MIB) database for insurance and the .gov database for MOT validity..... you still need insurance to tax a vehicle.

you no longer need a printed certificate of insurance to tax a vehicle, but it does need to be on the database as insured as it is checked.

I dont even have a printed certificate, mine is downloadable to print if i want one but theres no point, its all on the database which is what is checked by police and .gov

Executive summary
1.
There will no longer be a legal requirement for motorists to produce
evidence of valid insurance when they tax a vehicle
. However, they
will still need to be insured against their liability for injuries to others
(including passengers) and for damage to other people’s property resulting
from use of a vehicle on a road. Motorists will still be responsible for
ensuring that they have an adequate policy in place before they use or
keep a vehicle on the public road

Which is in complete contradiction to your original post......

You don't need insurance to tax a vehicle anymore

And this.....

Yes you do.....the insurance is checked electronically on the MID database by DVLA/S....as is the mot.

Not anymore

Try explaining that to a Gendarme with a big gun:)

You'd only be explaining that to a Gendarme if you were trying to buy road tax from him. Otherwise you'd be carrying your certificate to show him as its always been.

I may be able to offer some help here. For complicated reasons, when I purchased my wife's car, it got registered in my name. When we came to insure it, it was a simple matter of answering the questions about this. Consequently, on my wife's insurance certificate, it states "[wifes name] is the main driver, and legal owner, but not the registered keeper"

Hope that helps

Thank you all so much for your responses. Interesting to hear other people's experiences.
We spoke to insurers earlier and for a small fee they have changed the policy to show me as registered keeper and other half as main driver with me as a named driver.
All legal and above board now :) x
