Hi all

If you've been to Ireland recently I am curious to know how you found costs at the moment? Pound is strong against the euro of course, but in the past costs have always been higher. Would welcome any observations.

Food in supermarkets, say Tesco, Aldi compared to in UK
Food elsewhere
Drink, say wine in supermarkets, beer/other drinks in pubs
Fuel and gas

Oh, and I don't know where to put Q's about Eire...it's not UK and doesn't appear in 'Continental touring'. So it's here

TIA, Ruth

Last year food and drink more expensive, drink in the pub is dearer than here but diesel is cheaper,
So you win some and lose some, still a great place to visit!

I think its pretty much similar with the UK, You can get very reasonably priced " Pub Grub " just like the UK or pay a packet in fancy restaurants just like the UK......Diesel is cheaper, and more importantly, the Guinness tastes better here!;)

Was there about four weeks ago, the cost of the basics is a bit higher, but you will quids in with the pound as strong as it is at present. The roads are quiet, so a pleasure to drive, some of the sites are in spectacular locations and generally very friendly.
And hey, after the first couple of pints, if craic is good, who cares about the price!!

if you are looking for a cheap holiday, Ireland wont be the destination, however, the people, scenery, food, Guinness, welcome, craic are absolutely spectacular, I go 3 or 4 times a year, ranging from long weekends to a week or so touring on the bike taking in the road racing. I was there in July and will be back in October. Not yet taken the MH over, that`ll be next years to do.

at some point it will rain, be prepared, most of all enjoy, prices are relative to how well the euro is, eating out is good value, just do it.

Same here. Just looked for October half term when we're away next. One way from Fishguard to Rosslare is more expensive than the return tunnel trip I've booked. Add the same again for the return leg and it's about £365 in total. Tunnel return trip, same dates: £169.

not looking for cheap.. but £400 return is hard to swallow (see last post )
yes Jim, both Stena and Irish Ferries have a monopoly on the job, I presume you`re looking at cairnryan route? Holyhead/Dublin is about the same, you could try Nutt Travel in Belfast, they sometimes have deals on, I know a few of the race lads use them.

I didn`t mean you where looking for cheap, it was just a generalisation as in the cost of things in general is more, but, the quality of the holiday can outweigh the extra cost.

its a great place to visit, I avoid Dublin as for me its just a bit like most cities, overpriced and crowded, the west coast is a favourite, Co. Mayo, Galway. plus Kinsale is a jewel in the south west. theres so much more to discover, new towns and places to stop on every trip.

as an aside, did I read that the britstop handbook now has locations in Ireland? may be worth a look too, would reduce costs. wild camping is possible too, just use the normal common sense.

At present we live in Suffolk so was looking at Fishguard/Rosslare route ..

Like yourself, not interested in cities.. the west coast would be favorite.. and yes, cost has to be balanced against quality but £400 is a big chunk of a holiday budget.. no matter what the destination..
as I said earlier, have looked at touring Ireland several times in the past and always come to the same conclusion..

Ferry prices are expensive but once you are there it's brilliant. Prices much as UK but food better - we didn't have a bad meal and of course Guiness tastes better.
Ireland is not motorhome friendly. Small towns and villages all have height barriers on carparks. Campsites expensive. If in Galway stay clear of Salthill Caravan site - absolute rip off.
Connemara and the west coast is the place to head for - fantastic countryside. There is a site - safenightsireland - I think. we used it a couple of times and it was ok

Since May 05 (Ex Tuggers).
The lowest fare we managed back in 2006 was £175, and that was a special deal done for CC members travelling to the Nationals in Armagh.
It was a six week window with Stena, travelling to and from any of their UK/Irish destinations.
We did the Dublin thing, but wouldn't do it again.
We've got some unfinished touring to do, as we had to cancel our West coast plans, to head to Stranraer, and then Ayr rather sharpish. :(

Whilst the cost is in the region of £400, I'll not be sailing back any time soon. :(

Cheers,

Jock.

I agree Jim, Ferry prices are borderline extortionate. Its no wonder people from the UK give Ireland a miss and head to France etc. Pity, as Ireland does have a lot to offer. Sites are pretty much like UK, some good, some bad, some cheap. some expensive.....We need to take a leaf out of the French book and start making it more MH friendly. I'm out on the ferry in the next 2 weeks, Dublin to Holyhead and then down to the Tunnel for Europe and have to pay the price regardless.

Food in supermarkets is cheaper and meat is better quality for less. Wine and beer is more expensive in shops but if you buy in Aldi and Lidl (and there are plenty of them everywhere in Ireland) then it's not much more expensive than UK.

We are on our second trip to Ireland just now and diesel is even cheaper than in April/June when we were last here. We got a very good ferry deal with Irish Ferries for £99 single no matter what size of Mh. We were alerted to this by another funster on here (sorry can't remember who it was) and it was a deal from the NEC show at the beginning of the year so keep a lookout for similar bargains

Agree about the ferries, its taken us years to do this as its just so cheap and easy to get to France and the continent or enjoy the UK. But can't wait to revisit beautiful Ireland.
