Morning all, still looking for the right van but just wondered if you can get a better deal on a van in winter than in the summer months, my friend who is great at bartering has just bought a motorhome and the dealer wouldn't budge on the display price as they were selling so many . Is there normally room to barter with dealers?

Yes but in Europe..forget about buying in the UK:)
Why only in Europe? I don't want a LH drive and I know everyone will tell me to go for a German model, but the layouts just don't meet my requirements that the British vans do

Still looking at the same models, I think it's going to be bessacarr 745 e but need to get my head round the pay load as I had never even thought about it! We do want to tow a small car and have bikes, plus solar panels, air con and general bits you would have in the van.

Can't remember ;)
Things are changing ;) yes a couple of yrs ago I would have said that vans don't move from Oct to early March but now I have noticed that they shift any time of year :)There is always room for discounts though ;)Once your mind is made up on layout and the van you want then it's time to negotiate (y):D Good luck and don't pay too much (y)

When I first started looking in winter I noticed the vans on eBay sold quicker and got higher bids but as the summer has come they don't seem to be getting the bids ,I'm not good at negotiating but am certainly going to give it a go

Our first van was British with that sort of layout with two long benches and I have to say it isn't all that great. Also the build quality was appalling.

I would recommend that if you think you are 100% decided on that layout then hire one for at least week to see how it works for you when you're actually using it. You'll lose a lot of money if you buy the wrong van and end up trying to change it after a year.

I have owned a motor home before back in 2001 it was a swift kon tiki 6 berth with L shaped lounge area at back opposite toilet and dinette opposite kitchen, I found we only ever slept on the sofas and felt too claustrophobic when we were all in it, we tend to go away with other people and want that large lounge area to be able seat more people, but I understand what you're saying and really don't want to make a mistake or loose money so I shall carry on looking to see if we can find something better . Thanks

I always negotiate ;) It's not in my nature to pay full price for anything if there's a chance of a discount  If you don't ask you don't get :D The worst that can happen is you pay full price :(

Opposing sofas really are good and they have fallen out of favour with our continental cousins. I have to agree with you on the living space in these modern European models, I too prefer the more traditional layout. Whether you're spending 50k or 150k, some modern Euro van interiors are very often awful. Most these days seem follow the same pattern; prioritising a Luxury bedroom and bathroom, with a tiny centre kitchen and a pathetic living area up front, useless without the cab seats turned, the whole living area is cramped around one tight table. Their priorities for me at least are completely on their head. Very often if these owners want to socialise they'd be better of moving into their "substantial garage" which has more cat swinging room and is better appointed than their lounge. Mind you if you like cosy, and intimate meals (you didn't have to cook in the van) and spend a lot of time in bed or on the loo, then maybe these layouts suit. :)

I couldn't agree with you more. Hubby can't understand why I am not happy with the van we have just spent a fortune on (he wanted an A class and a scooter rack on the back!). Whilst I really appreciate the big A class window I really miss the 'proper' oven and spacious lounge we had in our previous coachbuilt (Autotrail Savannah), not to mention how difficult it is the make the enormous island bed we now have and that there isn't enough floorspace for a dog any larger than a yorkie, and I HATE the table which dominates the so called lounge area. The nearest I have found to an A class I like is the Hymer Duomobil, but .................the price  and it doesn't have a proper oven!!!!! Any ideas??

If you go away with other people as in your van I'd avoid side facing sofas and go for a dinette and rear lounge.
On newer vans it's the only way to travel legally !
I also think that you'll need a van plated at over 3.5 t if you want to carry 4 people ,bikes and something to wear.
Have a look at the euramobil range of vans some give double lounges and have acres of lounging space. We have an autotrail and love it as for build quality it feels solid and in 4 years nothing has fallen off.
You can get a bargain in the winter however not from a dealer, have you thought about buying private.People who have decided to sell a van may find over the winter months the phone stops ringing and be more open to offers.

Southdowns have a Euramobil Activa 820 for sale which is like What I have, only this one has leather seats.
Two lounges - U shaped at rear and dinette style with side sofa at the front - best of all worlds for space and ticks the boxes for travel seats.
Payload on this model will be in the region of 750kg depending on what extras have been added.
If you're interested, send me a PM, I'm happy to answer any questions you may have as the one for sale is virtually the same as what I've got. (And no, before anyone asks, I've no affiliation to the dealer!);)

When I say go away with people I mean they have their own van but we socialise together, the reason we like the extra traveling seats in the kon tiki is we have teenage girls and we want the traveling seats for the odd occasion, but it will really only be the two of us and so two bikes , I will take a look though

In 20 years I have gone from small to big then small again, the bigger the van the more rubbish you put in it,that's not needed.
Loved my Concorde Charrisma, but far to big for just holidays, before we lived in Vans ,which is different.
How long do you spend on the loo?? Bed???,or seated round a table, specially in summer, when I sit down my feet go up!!!
Hate fixed tables with vengeance ,I know lots of people who take them out,and it's a floor repair job.
I agree German makes are the best!! I now have a Auto sleeper,it's ok catching up with the continent .

I would get in touch with the one Judgemental recommended ,they will often pick you up at ports, depending on the rate of exchange it can be a lot cheaper to but abroad, but import duty to add.
Lots of right hand drives abroad, people travel, then style in Spain for example.!!!
Once you know what you want,it's just searching ,teenage daughters!!! Haven,t a chance how are they going to use there straighteners lol.

Not so much the straightners as the lack of wi fi their phones need surgically removing from their hands !! Drives me nuts
Although daughter did say " don't get travelling seats for me as I won't be coming with you"

Technically you should be able to buy a RHD van in Europe, EU and all that, new that is, reality may be a different thing though.
