Hello

I'm just about to book our ferry to France (Dover-Calais or Dover-Dunkirk) with DFD Seaways, and I've a couple of questions for all those 'seasoned' UK to France travelers on the site.

1. Which is the best entry port, Calais or Dunkirk?

2. There seems to be no difference in the fare if I book a single or a return, so I'm thinking of booking the single and then book the return a few days before we want to return to the UK. This would give us the flexibility we would like. Is there any problem with this option?

Thanks.

We have only booked one way for the same reason. When are you going? It will be a fair travel for you. Eh

I would check that any travel insurance you may have covers you if you don't have a return booked, most don't!

Hello

Irnbru: We are going at the start of October. Yes, it is about 690 miles to Dover for us, but we'll do the trip in two or three legs and make it a part of our holiday.

Chaser: We get travel insurance with our bank account, thanks for your advice.

Even so I would check the small print, we went for five weeks last year with no return booked and only found out by having nothing better to do than look at my policy one night , and this was with stay sure , on my return I rang them and it was indeed the case , even though they had about £100 off me I had been away for five weeks with effectively no insurance:(

Are you talking about vehicle insurance here?

any more than three months out of the UK and you are not entitled to NHS treatment, hence the need for a return booking.

Well that's it then, decision made, I booked us on the Dover-Calais Ferry, one-way at the beginning of October! Apart from a visit to Paris we will 'make it up' as we go along and book our return trip when it suits us. (y)

Thanks everyone for your help, suggestions and comments.

Don't know where you got that idea. Son has lived in France for nearly 5 years but still gets medical treatment here on NHS. He does work for a UK company, maybe this is why.

Don't know where you got that idea.

• The NHS does not normally provide free hospital treatment for
people who do not reside in the UK even if they are UK nationals
• If you have lived outside the UK for more than 3 months
(6 months for some pensioners) in the last year you can be charged
• You will be exempt from charges if you can produce evidence that
you have been working abroad for less than 5 years and have lived
in the UK continuously for at least 10 years at some point

I guess he is ok here as he just uses our address then. He does pay tax, NI here so should be entitled to NHS. A lot of people using the NHS do so without contributing.
