Sometimes I’ve found myself with a week or so free, just can’t be doing with all the restrictions of UK touring and tempted to nip across the Channel but not enough time to get very far from Calais before time to return.

A few years ago I came across a little book:

Northern France – What to do and see within 90 minutes of Calais. By Angela Bird. ISBN-13: 978-0-9545803-1-5. Published by Malnoue.

It contains some very interesting suggestions and details of places many of us just drive rapidly past on our way to “somewhere else”.

Quite a good Starter Pack for those venturing over there for the first time and not yet ready for that long haul south.

There are a few copies currently on Ebay for around a fiver.

Not on many guides and stuff and it just looks like the biggest block of concrete ever but when you get inside its almost unbelievable that such a thing could be built without modern machines.
Well worth half a day!

If you've got a week then Normandy is within easy reach and the D-day beaches are well worth visiting if you haven't been before.

We have spent many weekends near to Calais in the past.
From Calais turn right and head on down to the aire at Le Touquet.
Turn left and we head up to Brugge or Ghent.

There is a small aire at Watten , close to the canal and a short walk to some shops.

Stay at the Boulogne aire on the cliff top. get the bus that goes past ( Ligne F from Wimereux) into Place France- which is Boulogne bus station- and wait at the same stop for the free navette which takes you up to the old town. This is well worth an explore especially the Japanese garden and belfry in the Maire, the Cathedral, a walk round the walls and the ( new) Moroccan/ Alhambra garden that was made from a car park in the square outside the Maire. Plenty of excellent places to eat up there too. There's always Nausicaa, just down from the aire, or, opposite the aire, the place where Napolean first presented the Legion d'Honneur to his grand army. An interesting commonwealth war cemetery nearby, Wimereux is worth a visit and there is the huge Auchan at St Martin -Boulogne on the way back to the autoroute to go back to Calais.

Theres also a frites van that opens about 7 pm in the layby opposite the aire !
