Finally after waiting 2 yrs we are venturing off to France in a few weeks time. Not fussy where we go so long as its south for some sunshine. We have approx. 3 1/2 weeks plus 2 days each side for getting to and from Calais. We don't have a route planned as such yet but would like to know recommended aires to stop at and to avoid and from your responses I can hopefully work out a route. I have the aires book so can look at your advice :)

Vaison-la Romaine not an outstanding Aire, but a fabulous town, loads of Roman ruins, one 24 hour ticket buys you access to all sites.
Tuesdays is market day probably the best market we have ever seen in France it engulfs the whole town, if you want to go to the market get to Aire Monday morning to guaranty a space. A bit expensive by French standards, €10 with free servicing.

Travelling down La Mailleraye sur Seine is a lovely spot, near Rouen but avoiding travelling through it. Brantome has a lovely aire as well. Depends which route you are thinking of going

How far south do you mean by 'southern'?

Heading down the west side our first aire stop would be Parc Futuroscope.

Down the East side it would probably be Seurre, Dijon municipal, or Mesnil-Saint-Pere, depending on progress.

Aire at Verteuil Sur Charente a few miles North of Angouleme is really nice and easy to get to off the old N10. You will be joined by ducks. A short walk through the park to the river and a footbridge across. The village has an old working flour mill run off a waterwheel. They advertise the days they will be grinding so you can pay to watch. And it also have a lovely looking small Chateau. When we were there is had closed for the day, but looks really nice to look around.

The wild bit on the beach still part of the same Aire. Went there last year & the year before, also a nice Aire at the western side of town, with a total of 5 Aires, Motorhomer's outnumber the population of this very small town.

We are off again for three weeks mid September, we are heading to La Lavendou, I plan a route mostly avoiding tolls around things we want to see or, avoid, then look for sites or aires close to the route, working a rough plan which inevitably changes under way.
Biggest decision is whether to go East or West of Paris ;-)

FRANCE every year for us and use both aires and sites but this year found a number of good camp sites were we only paid 10 to 12 euro's.Some with swimming pools etc so now look at campsites first! We find that some Aires now charge 10 euro's!So you pay your money and take your choice

Hi Sandra @irnbru I think you need to plan some sort of route/direction as there are that many aires and camping sites that it will be impossible to choose.

That could happen anywhere Kermit

Yep-were next to them and our bikes were on back of van, locked and covered, they were untouched :) Only problem we had there was local ''Flic' admonishing me for cycling on pedestrian area near church.

Not an aire but continuing the theme of some campsites are as cheap as aires:

La Pepiniere in Agde is only €12 using your ACSI card (outwith main season). Clean facilities, great pool and good (free) wifi. Link here.

What's the easiest route down to the south. I'm not used to driving on the other side of road but think I will manage well once I get started.
