:(

Firstly for anybody who has been with me for the last couple of days, there appears to be nothing wrong with the gearbox, as yet anyway :)(y)

The fault with limp mode cutting in, as advised by others is apparently very unlikely if not impossible to be caused by mechanical issues

Mine is a function of the turbo boost management, (no idea what I am talking about) but paid more attention when being told this time :D

Some box of tricks attached to the turbo are telling fibs to the next thing it talks to, my words not the engineers , it says the turbo is giving too much boost when it not actually giving enough, so cuts down on turbo power (I think that's more or less it anyway)

So, we need a new box of thingies for the side of the turbo then do we? No, Mercedes only sell the thingies attached to the turbo, which is still absolutely perfect, only just done 20K miles, no we need a complete turbo, £1200 + VAT plus how on earth do you get to the top of the engine in an S class Mercedes MH??

Hymer have been sent an email to ask how they would get to it, dash out or engine out seem the only options

Has anybody else has this happen to their turbo what did they do? My man is not keen to send the turbo away for fixing by an independent as what if he spends hours refitting and it still doesn't work, seems a more than fair point

So plan A is, buy new turbo, fit, put my problem to bed, then maybe send off my faulty bits for refurb and sell them to recover some of my costs, at least it will still be much less than working on the gearbox (y)

Mercs are getting a bit notorious for this.. Remember a couple of years ago ? We had reports of Mercs dying all over the continent with a hole in number 3 piston..
Mercs could not ( would not in other words ) supply a piston, you had to replace the engine

Real sorry to hear of all your woes David, but it makes me real glad I made a conscious decision to stick with Pug/Fiat chassis's

Oh dear! Your description about the box of tricks telling the next box that the turbo is giving too much boost, sounds very much like the explanation I was given when mine was repaired. I guess my engine (older than yours) has a separate turbo controller that is not attached to the turbo unit. The part replaced on mine was called a Pressure Converter or Electro pneumatic Pressure Transducer (Part MA000 545 05 27) and it cost £86 +VAT in 2012. My Hymer/Sprinter has the OM612 engine (2,685 cc, 156 bhp, 5-cylinder).
You mention emailing Hymer but I think they shut down for August so you may not get a quick reply.

I would consider talking to Crewe Engines about the problem. http://www.creweengines.co.uk/index.htm
Although their business is re-manufacturing entire engines, they must have some knowledge of how the turbo control works. Also, are you talking to a Mercedes commercial dealer or a private garage? The dealer might know best how to fix the problem.

Hello Philip, he is a private garage but specialises on Mercedes, as it is a Sprinter chassis he knows exactly what is needed, just that he cant even see it properly through the bonnet 'slot'

The first bit fitted made sense to try, now they know for sure it needs the turbo :(, we have used him for years I have total confidence (y), and really the last thing I need right now is conflicting opinion :), it cant be driven without being rebuilt anyway

I don't know anything about this electrical stuff but my son in law works on vitos and other mercs self employed and has often repaired ones that merc reckon they can't , now I'm not suggesting anything other than , try another garage , not knocking your man in any way but there may be others that know a bit more about them, by regularly working on them.(y):)

this is always a tough one, I do trust him and kind of have to, I would have to pay to put it back together to really be recovered to another place who I have never even dealt with, in this case better the devil you know maybe applies

It's only money, but does bear out why I sell cars as they get close to three years old and would go out of warranty, my 1 year old Mercedes jut had over £2K paid for by Merc on the gearbox

I think you may all see me in a new MH next time we meet up :) always presuming I have enough left to put fuel in the thing

One of the normally unforeseen problems with an "A" class is when serious engine maintenance is required and then you realise that there isn't much room to manoeuvre. It was bad enough for me trying to change a fuel filter on my Merc 550. I managed it eventually but it wasn't all that straight forward. At least with a coach built you can remove body bits and the front grill easy enough.

David have a read through this link...........with your recent battery problems and now turbo.........this might be of interest....

Bear in mind ' condensation' is a factor here.

Might be worth a try even for your mechanic.

My son has a garage, he had a Sprinter in for repair a few weeks ago it turned out the plastic actuator gears had sheared. We bought one locally I can find out for you where the supplier hangs out, it was Leeds if I remember rightly. Ask your garage to check the turbo vanes are not seized this could be the cause of the failure. Another company offers a repair service close to j28 of the M1 let me know if you need any more info.

Hope you get it all sorted soon regardless(y)

even the pictures scare the bee jeezus out of me, but many thanks, have passed it on to the workshop but the laptop I think has now defined our problem pretty specifically to the turbo (y)

thanks for his and the other links, (y) the turbo is actually perfect it is the box of bits that tells it what to do that has gone off on a tangent, its just that Merc will not sell the box on its own :mad: or have wired it in such a way as to make it near impossible

This is why I posted the two links these companies will repair your actuator or sell you a new one. In your words the box of bits that tells it what to do. I have just noticed your location ECU testing are not far from you.

David, what you have described over the last few days would be for me a personal nightmare, I am sure you are frustrated and sick of it but you do seem to be remarkably calm and sanguine about it all. For my part having a person working on it fairly local that you trust would be really important and hopefully he is checking out some of the info provided as you never know.

We really hope you get it fixed and although nothing we can do to help, Jacqui and I shall raise a glass or two of red to a speedy resolution.

Thanks, I was confused by your reference to checking vanes and presumed you meant the whole turbo, I sent both links through to my fitter will discuss further on Monday (y)

Cheers to you both, will be on to red in a bit, for now we found a bottle of Botanist Gin, I saw a suggestion of adding crushed fresh raspberries, works really well (y)

The MH can wait till Monday, might just go to Premium MH's have a look at the Carthagos and blame Robert Clark, must say though the Burstner Nexio coach built suddenly seems a rather better proposition, or any other coach built for that matter

Looked up sanguine :LOL: cant drink it, it can't apply to me :LOL:
