Hi,

I'm looking to buy an Adria Twin SP. The current owner informs me he is insured through Safeguard at around £450 pa with European cover (plus extras). The lowest quote I've found however (I need European cover), not safeguard, is £980 pa. I see other threads on here where people around paying around £300 pa.

This is very frustrating, not really sure why it's coming back so high. Anyone else paying insurance this high?

Thanks

When I last renewed my insurance policy I got a quote from one company, can't remember which one now but one of the main players, of about £450. I said to the lady on the phone that this was too high and she very quickly reduced the quote to about £297. When I queried why she didn't offer this price in the first place she, in a rare show of honesty, said that I might have been quoted £600 so the original £450 would have seemed cheap.

In other words, they just try it on. Always shop around and play one off against the other till you get a sensible quote.

Thanks Paul. I've just spent three hours on the phone to brokers, and have managed to get a slightly cheaper quote of £742. A soul sucking three hours mind you, repeating the same information over and over

I guess I can try phone back some of the previous brokers and see if they can beat this, but I'm not optimistic. One of them even quoted £1230 and said I should just go with the cheaper one, there was nothing she could do.

Something about my application is making the price a lot higher, not sure what.

Could it be your address? I notice that your avatar refers to London and I wonder if this is one of the factors. Just a thought.
I am just in the process of renewing my insurance and the broker has quoted me £350 for a van valued at £39k with protected no claims.

Difficult I know but try to be specific on your mileage, I usually do less than 4000 miles a year and it makes a big difference?

Unless of course your young with accidents n speeding tickets?????;)

Have you tried AIB?

Also see what the European cover costs, you may be able to get better cover cheaper on its own(y)

Could be my address. Hard to know, the process is obviously opaque. I live in Kingston borough, wouldn't know if that is regarded as higher risk. I'm in late 30s, but parter younger so perhaps that affects it. One no fault claim about a year ago when my existing car was hit by another car while parked. *shrug* Guess I just have to suck it up.

Edit: I plan on doing more than 4000 mile in my upcoming trip, so ...

When we were fulltiming for a while a couple of years ago our insurance was £850 for the year. I was expecting this so no complaint there. As you say, there must be some reason why your quote is so high - £1230 is just ridiculous.

Where do you plan to keep your van?

Looking in MMM I see Comfort are quoting about the £200 mark for a year's insurance on a new vehicle, £266 for a £100,000 van!

Hi, just done renewal ourselves. We had been with C&CC for a few years, so did some ringing round. Quotes all very similar, slight variations in length of term of European breakdown cover, so as C&CC still cheapest for us (very little between them and AIB) we have remained with them (after ensuring their European cover included our 4500kg vehicle). We do have full no claims and no black marks - it's their rules re accidents, which I always think is unfair in your circumstances. I did wonder if given our new van value the number of companies providing cover was down to one as the quotes were so similar.

Since 2007. But no more.
Just moved my address to Poplar from Grimsby and my car insurance went from £240 to £470 so it could have something to do with your address.
Grimsby has a higher crime rate than Poplar, so I guess, they think that if you can afford to live in London, you can afford the higher premium!

Here's a list of the insurance groups by postcode - it may shed some light on the matter (or not).

Another vote for AIB from us. They came up trumps this year even after our storm damage claim. We will ask them for a quote for the car when that comes due :)

Had this problem a couple of years back i had full no claims clean licence Motorhome parked on drive Strike-back alarm, safe area and a young 54 years old.
Problem was that my no claims discount was against our companies insurance policy and so they were the holder of the no claims discount and not me even though established 22years and 2 no fault claims once when parked and another car hit mine driver had walked away and had not put handbrake on ,other accident rear ended on motorway traffic stopped guy 4 cars back didn't , Watched it unfold in rear view mirror. Got the Fleet policy insurers to do a letter saying that i had been on policy for the duration took this to insurance company and then given full no claims discount and age discount. now with NFU and policy ticks all the boxes for UK /Europe unlimited time away and recovery van over 3500kg.

It could be because you haven't any no claims on the motorhome. You need to ask them to mirror your no claims...... we were lucky as I sold my car just before we got the motorhome so I was able to transfer that no claims to the motorhome. :)

Thanks for the tips all. I'll try AIB. As mentioned, I was using brokers, some of whom apparently specialise in motorhome insurance. I tried safeguard, scenic, one answer, call connection, Adrian flux.

They all asked about my existing no claims and said they'd try to mirror it, but the result was as above. None could tell me the exact reason the quotes were so high just saying it was quite a niche request (surely it isn't).

AIB took my notice of no claims as proof. It could well depend on the broker and insurer and the type and size of car you were previously driving.

One insurance company quoted me silly money and used the excuse that I would have no experience in driving anything as big as a motorhome..... I laughed and told them about my old 7.5 tonne bus and asked if they'd like photos of me driving through the Central Massif in a snow storm.... or maybe in Colorado's high country!

My guess is that the main thing will be the possibility of vandalism or theft whilst not being used, which will be based upon the postcode. As others have said - where do you store it?

I have just renewed with Safeguard, Full European cover for 365 days, breakdown, unlimited mileage, stored at my home and value under £30k. Cost me £317. But we are in TN3 postcode, which is rated as lowest risk. KT is between A and E, depending upon where you are.

Our quotes ranged from 389 (Comfort) to 14525 (Adrian Flux), to some not prepared to insure, went with Safeguard they started at 649 and went down to 460 after quoting the Comfort quote. We like Comfort and we used them on the last van but they insist on a mileage figure for the year and becauise they are Aviva they insist on Thatcham Cat1 Alarm and Cat5/6 tracker, Safeguard are not mileage restricted so not bothered about going over, and the Alarm Tracker is not tied to Thatcham so can go for something a bit more advanced.

I went with a broker quote with Highway as the underwriter. We payed £742. Unfortunately, I went through the policy documents again last night and saw the vehicle was incorrectly marked as RHD (it is a LHD). I phoned to rectify and the underwriter have voided the insurance.

I now have an uninsured van and not getting any luck on quotes. We have the ferry booked for Monday morning. I am very very frustrated as I don't think I am going to be able to turn this around in time :(

Great news and thanks to everyone for the tip about AIB. They've come back with a quote, less than the previous one! So the van is now insured again and things look on track.

The agent mentioned the reason he was having problems was the age of my partner (29) meant most underwriters didn't want to know. I guess I could have just been the sole driver if it came to that.

Hopefully sorted now :)

Panic over, till the next thing!

I got our van insured with C&CC, they required a Tracker to be fitted as it was over £50k, luckily they have a discount scheme with Appello Geo trackers and I got the van insured for less than £250. No breakdown cover required as it had Peugeot cover for 2 years. Now in our 3rd year with the van, premiums still under £250 and I use LV For Euro breakdown cover.
