Hi All

I am interested in a Hymer S630 with a 2.9TD automatic engine. I wondered what peoples views were on this vehicle? and experiences of driving, reliability, fuel economy and how smooth for longer journeys?

its a 2000 year model

many thanks

Since 2007. But no more.
I had a '99 S630 with the u shaped lounge and it was a good motorhome, but I did have a problem with the rear lower cross beam, which was wooden and eventually rotted out, due to water being thrown up from the back wheels.
It needs regular checks, to ensure it's waterproof coating is intact.

Around 22mpg, if driven reasonably carefully.

I bought a 2002 S640 after it and there was a lot less engine noise.

All that said, I did like the S630.

I had a S620, and agree with both the above.

Is it auto or Sprintshift? The Sprintshift is manual with a Hydraulic clutch, drives like an auto but not quite the same thing!

Thanks for the replies, Mariner, how do I check for the cross beam. Is it easily seen from looking under the back of the van?

What do I need to look out for?

Thanks

It can be seen behind the rear plastic bumper, and check that the waterproof membrane is intact.

I did say that mine had a rear u shaped lounge but not all S630 are the same so the rear cross beam could have been unique for that layout.

We have a 1997 manual S630. As mentioned previously dont expect outstanding mpg, but solid van and layout that suits us great. One thing to watch for - rusting hinges on integrated bike rack - expensive to repair.

Hi Vouty - your photo looks the same as the model I am looking at - how does it work for you on a living basis - (is there only 2 x travel seats?)
whats the rear lounge like as a bed?
how do you find the weight being only 3500kg on a big vehicle?

thanks

Hi marcus we like it, but the there ae just 2 of us + 2 dogs and it feels roomy without being too long. We came frome a teardrop caravan so really like the u-shape lounge to king size bed setup - we sleep on top of a bottom layer duvet and get a really good nights sleep. The overcab bed is comfy but cramped for 2. When I weighed it fully laden recently it was bang on 3500 - have since take off the sat dish as we dont use plus a few other bits. Can be uprated to 3850 as a paperwork exercise. Drives really well and feels solid - hardly a squeak or a creak - unlike a moden swift we hired a couple of years ago_Only problem weve had is a shower drain leak - probably due to not being drained properly over winter. We ere touring scotland for 3 weeks in july so will be a good test as we have only managed weekends away so far.

I viewed the van today and it looks great - all in very good nick and original. Checked under the van at the back and it looks very good with no obvious signs of water ingress or penetration.

I may have a new van come Saturday..... :)

Good luck with it. The 2.9 5 cylinder Merc diesel is regarded as one of the most robust they have ever produced. So long as it's been looked after, it should do at least 250,000 miles without blinking from what I have read.
(My Starline 630 has the later 2.7 CDi 5-pot which is also good and more powerful, but the 2.9 is the one with the bullet-proof reputation.)
