Hi there
We're not exactly new to motor homing having started 25 years ago and then moving to caravans, but we have returned to our roots and come back to a motorhome :). However, we are looking to sell our 5 yr old Burstner Nexxo T660 in which we've had 2 fantastic years of fun and get a Hymer A class.
Our Burstner - Betty :sneaky:, reliably gives us 30mph and we're wondering now what fuel consumption we can expect from both a 2.3L manual and a 3L automatic Fiat Hymer A class, both on a 4,250kg chassis, driven sensibly.

We welcome your experienced feedback:active:
thanks from Marzipan (Mike & Gail)

not long enough
you will now get figures ranging from 15 - 40 mpg, we have a Hymer but with Mercedes auto, very lucky to get 20 mpg

Big difference going from 2.3 to 3.0, but I would not fancy 2.3 trying to move over 4 tons myself

My logic is mpg doesn't make enough difference to really worry, its the depreciation you need to watch for, leave it parked your mpg will not be a problem but it will still lose value

Use it, have fun, try not to worry about running costs (y)

Autotrail FB weighing the thick end of 4 ton.

Around 30 mpg. Dead steady driving, hardly ever go over 60mph.

There is always tomorrow to complete the journey (y):)

I've been giving the mpg question a lot of thought and I'm with David on that one, work out the numbers over the whole cost of running a mh, I'm also going for the 3.liter engine as I'd like to have the extra power and less strain on the engine , IMHO a 2.3 is a bit light for shifting over 4 tons and when some A class are fully laden they get closer to 6 tons that's a lot of strain on the engine, gearbox and transmittion

We have a 2005 Fiat Ducato 2.3 JTD, 3.5 tonnes with a luton, and that gives us about 23 mpg on motorways at 60+ mph, more on 'A' roads.

These days, it's nothing to do with engine size, what matters is horsepower and torque. If you want real power then go for something with plenty of each (y)

Me? I am very happy with 130hp 2.3L manual Fiat PVC at 37mpg average and 42 to 45 on the motorways :D

I think that MPG only really matters if you travel a long way (we do!). If you are only doing a few thousand miles a year I really would not let it bother you quite frankly :)

On a simple calculation -
if you get 30mpg and fuel is £5.50 \ gallon (£1.21\litre) every 1,000 miles you travel will cost you £183.
if you get 20mpg and fuel is £5.50 \ gallon (£1.21\litre) every 1,000 miles you travel will cost you £275.
an extra £92/1000 miles or nearly 5 nights on a site at a cost of £20\night.

So, travel around Europe, say 5000 miles in 8 weeks, around half of your nights site fees would be "free" if 30mpg vs 20mpg.

Obviously, there are a million and one permutations of the calculation but it's maybe a thought to ponder?

2010 Autotrail Savannah 3 litre doing 22/23 mpg over 900 miles in Europe not far short of 4.5 tons and we have not got to the mountains yet. Drive mostly in the range from 55 to 65. Quite happy with that. Pulls like anything and has loads of power in reserve.

OK, on the fuel cost figure quoted by Chocy Biscuit the figures would be -
if you get 30mpg and fuel is £3.80 \ gallon (£0.84\litre) every 1,000 miles you travel will cost you £127.
if you get 20mpg and fuel is £3.80 \ gallon (£0.84\litre) every 1,000 miles you travel will cost you £190.
an extra £63/1000 miles or over 3 nights on a site at a cost of £20\night.

So, travel around Europe, say 5000 miles in 8 weeks, over a quarter of your nights site fees would be "free" if 30mpg vs 20mpg.

Now at a more leisurely pace away from the motorways in Austria and now doing 23.5 mpg. Been over some big hills and around a load of hairpin bends with more to come as we head from Vienna to the Tyrol via Carinthia.

Buying a Hymer A Class at anything between 60k-100k does a few hundred quid a year on fuel either way really matter?:)

I monitor our consumption out of interest, but it doesn't bother me & doesn't make me drive any slower.
Our Hymer has 2.3, 150 bhp with Comformatic box, usually get around 27-28, had 30 on one occasion, returned yesterday from 3 weeks in France most of the time we were there we had very strong winds consumption was 24-25 mpg.

My old 3.0 litre Fiat 4.25 tonne returned anywhere between 23 /28 depending on journey length and speed. This new Frankia 3.litre Mercedes V6 but 5.3 tonne is between 21 / 23 though on one journey it used absolutely no fuel whatsoever, sadly it was only the down hill part of the journey........
