Sent the truck for service last week and was greeted with a plastic bag full of bits of metal. Ooh I thought, whats that. It turns out that when my mechanic dropped the axle oil like a god mechanic does he filtered the old oil as it came out. There were small pieces of metal in there indicating something is breaking up and excessive end float. So I start to do my research and it turns out that its a problem with the 1500 Ram. So its off down to a specialist differential builder tomorrow in Birmingham to have an uprated diff put in. All donations will be gratefully received. Am just thankful it did not self destruct whilst up in Norway next month. Preventative maintenance rules, but ignorance is bliss.

It just proves that preventative maintenance does pay in the long term. Although there will be little change out of £2k when rebuilt I dread to think how much it would have cost to rebuild it in Norway, even if a specialist could be found. Ah, the joys of travel.

Good job you have loads of surplus wedge to throw at your caravan tugger.

Just pay the two grand bill with some of the loose change you have in you spare trousers, and you can still pay for a pie and chips.

Poor, freeloading pensioners have to have less ostentatious transport.

I was hoping that a certain ex pat would help out and buy some of my surplus stock, just to help out. Looks like its going to be a very lean winter now. What happened to this "We are all in it together" nonsense :(.

Nah, it just means wilding it with JJ for a couple of months and helping him eat some of those disgusting pies. The Bolli and Beluga is still on order in Beni. I know me old mate JJ wont see me starving.

Got it down to Birmingham first thing this morning and immediately up on the ramp with the pan off. On first inspection, the crown wheel and pinion is undamaged and its looking like the offending bits were the planet gears breaking up. Have left it in the capable hands of a South African who does nothing else only strip and rebuild axles for a living. At first inspection preventative maintenance does rule. Am just wondering how many garages filter drained oil to inspect for debris. It seems I was not such a bastard to work for after all as my mechanic still follows the procedures I taught him. So many disasters can be avoided by close inspection and testing of drained oils. In all the years of long haul trucking I never had to leave one at the side of the road through engine, gearbox or axle failure.
