Ok so this year I intend to go to portugal for 2 weeks. I know it's a long way but I'm used to driving 8 hours a day to get there. Not new to Europe done france Germany switzerland Italy etc etc before.

We love coastal areas, love shopping in nice towns , like water in all forms ie rivers seas lakes. Like olds worldly towns too (love nice ). Like to be walking distance to lively areas, bars restaurants etc.

So where are the must see areas for a fortnight away. Just starting planning at the moment for a June holiday

Im sure there are hundreds of places worthy of a visit but on the first occasion we went to Portugal we were impressed with
Cabo de São Vicente - Cape St Vincent and Sagres . In the days of Vasco de Gama and Christopher Columbus this most south westerly point of Portugal was thought to be the edge of the known world.

Lisbon is a fantastic city, not to be missed on the way down or back up, good camp site on the outskirts with bus service, Broken Link Removed
Lagos although a holiday town in many respects, has an intriguing old town, if you have transport Turiscampo is a great site in the locale, there is also a bus service, and along the coast is Cape St Vincent, as the previous poster said well worth a visit, to watch the fishermen hundreds of feet up the cliff, fishing. Landing nets on huge reels of line to haul the catch up. Me I could not stand within 10 feet of them let alone on the edge of the cliff!

We like a lot of the places in the north but we didn't come until 1st October so if was starting to get cold. We are now down in the Algarve having visited lots of different places, we like to be near the sea. We are in Albufeira at the moment but find it very comercialised. We loved the little coves and beaches and also the old towns. There are not many places we don't like here, and the weather in winter of course. Come on down, you'll love it.

Is that two weeks including gettimg there and back!
Yep afraid so. The perils of having to work. I know it's a distance but I did the south of france this year ,Italy ,switzerland ,Germany and Belgium in 3 weeks.
Not ideal I know but when I retire ill go slower. Many thanks for all the other suggestions, gives me something to look at to start planning

Visit Carvoeiro, nice little village with plenty of places to eat and drink. It's a short bus ride from the Portimao camp site. We have been to Portugal many times and Carvoeiro is our favourite place. You should also take a trip to Monchique. Enjoy(y)

Might get better results if you start a new thread on the subject (y)

Monsaraz is a must. Beautiful fortified hill village close to the border with Spain. Stay at the Aire, the view from your motorhome will be absolutely breathtaking. You will need to get there early - when we were there in April it was full by 5pm.

I'm now all excited. Last week our holiday was going to the Italian lakes again as not enough time to go to Portugal. Now with the extra week I'm off to where I actually want to go.

Can't believe how much research and info I've got in only a day and a half

We went to Portugal earlier this year and loved it. We will be back. The people are friendly (and speak English) the food was good and cheap and it is very motorhome friendly with plenty of places to stop, either official or unofficial. We had 4 weeks in total.

It should only take a couple of days to get through France. Then, with the time you have got, use the mainly free motorways in Spain to get South quickly, before you cross into Portugal. We crossed West of Cacares on the way out and East of Elvas on the way back. That way we saw some of the real Portugal as well as the more touristy Algarve.

Most of the motorways in Portugal are tolled. Some of them have an electronic only system and to use those you must register your vehicle number and credit/debit card at the border. It is an absolute pain because you can only do it at one of 4 border crossings! We solved that problem by just not using the motorways. Secondary roads are usually wide and smooth, but sometimes they can be bumpy - the IP2 between Evora and Castro Verde and the 125 along the Algarve coast can be a bit rough in places.

If you have not already done so get the Aires book for Spain and Portugal and an ACSI card. Both can be bought from Vicarious Books (just Google).

We Love Portugal if you ever pass a little place called Olhos DAgua on the coast between Albufiera and Faro There is a car park on the left as you go down the hill to the beach. Don't drive to the bottom its a dead end then walk to the beach turn right and there is a little restaurant hidden on stilts but food is fab and a view of the sea you can only get to it from the beach unless you want to walk hundreds of steps.
There is also an ASCI app for those with iPads etc you can use the app offline with the map.

Not so, it can be done online and prepaid though registering at the border is the easiest and probably the best. We have done this a few times and have never been debited, the system may be working properly now though.
