Newbie!
Someone mentioned to me recently the law has changed when travelling to Europe and you now need a GB sticker as well as on your number plate? Does anyone know if this is correct?
Thanks

I'm pretty sure things haven't changed since I was there last year. You have to have one but if your number plate includes one then you don't need another but can display one of you chose.

In reality I 'displayed' mine in my glove box for years before getting a magnetic one for the car... Then swapped cheap hotels for a camper which had it on the plate anyway.. just got a new camper and havent looked yet

It depends on what you have on the blue strip on your numnber plate.
If you have the EU stars and the letter UK or GB then the "Vienna Convention on Road Traffic" oval plates are not required in the EU.
Its where ENG, SCO and CYM are used with their "Regional" flags that an oval plate is techically required outside of the UK.

Note that the Vienna Convention requires that where the country code is part of the number plate it must appear on both the front and rear of the vehicle (motorcycles excepted) but the oval plate is only required on the rear.

Lots of reading matter available...

Didn't know that @ScotJimland. We're spending some time in Switzerland over the summer so that's another thing on the to-do list (y)

Even if you have euro-plates, a GB sticker is required in Switzerland and some other Non EU countries.
Ah well, that's me the renegade.......... drove through Switzerland without knowing that

(at least I bought a vignette for €40 tho' :))

Why is it only the Belgians can have red characters on their number plates? I want red characters. Not fair.

Spent a month there too with no extra GB sticker and we bought our vignette from the STO in London, about £30 if I remember right. Only problem was I stuck it on the windscreen only to change vans before we went, they don't peel off too well and I had to call them for a replacement.

LOL......... that's because they're not meant to be transferred (but in your case I'm sure it was OK :))

Me too.

When pulled at the Toulouse Paige coming back from Spain, the Gendarme saw the SCO and CYM stickers on the rear bumper, and commented that no GB sticker was present. I smugly pointed to the upper rear window where a GB sticker could be clearly seen..................stuck on with White Tak. ;)

Cheers,

Jock.

Name 5 famous Belgians not inc Hercule Poirot. Bet you cant, stick to blue.
Phil

I can do 4:

Hergé (Tin Tin's creator)
Eddy Merckx, cyclist
Ernest Solvay, industrial scientist. They have a road named after him round our way.
The genocidal King Leopold II

They've only been a nation since 1830 so we've got a bit of a head start.

I still want red characters on my number plate.
