Having just returned from a whistle stop tour around Scotland (enjoyable) we have decided to devote the whole of our holidays to three trips across 2016.
All ideas gratefully received based on 2x1 week trips and a three week trip.
We will definitely incorporate Edinburgh again but not a whole week so looking for other destination local.
FYI there are easy transport options to town from site
1 - half hourly minibus @ £6 return each from CC site
2 - 10 minute walk to bus stop where :-
No 16 goes to city via Ocean dock (Royal Yacht Brittania) or no. 27 direct to city about 20 mins, both buses frequent. BUS day ticket £4 each
Edinburgh castle!!! book online save lots of time!!! £16.50 each.
I saw the huge queue for pay today and nearly walked away but saw the pre pay ticket collection point and it took me about 10 minutes to buy tickets there and then (Iphone) with a very short queue to collect in comparison

One weeks holidays in Scotland ! Bearing mind the size of the place you are limited to the South, ie. Dumfries and Galloway or the Cities !

Just an opinion!

Three weeks........The Outer Hebrides !

We just did Leeds/Strathclyde/Ullapool/Durness/Dunnet Bay/ John o Groats/ Brora/ Blair Athol/Pitlochry/Edinburgh/Leeds (y) 9 days Fri/Sun
I easy do 250 miles in the day with lots of time to spare but next year we will focus better.
The longer holiday will focus on West Coast and Islands.
When we add up the cost of diesel and ferry/tunnel to France it goes a very long way to staying here or there! (Scotland)

The Ferry to Skye seems reasonably priced (I just did a quick test of two adults with up to 7.5 metres sub £50 one way) given the logistics of your personal route through Scotland.

This reasonable ferry pricing may be partly due also to the abolition of tolls in Scotland.
Some not very well written background to the Skye bridge

Why would you want to get the ferry when you can take the bridge for free?

If you are travelling South to North or North to South it is a lot of extra miles if you only use the bridge.
For me it is most cost effective in diesel and time to cross on the ferry and come off on the bridge to continue north.

We're thinking of touring Scotland next summer too. Probably the Highlands and Islands for us as not been that far yet. Nearly got to Skye last year so that's on our list and I agree with Irnbru about the bridge, we'll drive over. I've been recommended to visit Durness by 3 people recently so that seems like a must. We'll probably go up the west coast but I'll see what others suggest on this thread. Depending on time of year I'd recommend checking out local Highland games as they are a fantastic day out. We visited Strathdon games last year which are the oldest Highland games and it is a stunning sight watching 200+ clans men march into the arena in traditional dress, led by horse and carriage and all carrying war spears.

Taking Fort William to Harrapool as a test in google maps there is only 18 miles difference twixt ferry & bridge and bridge is 30 minutes faster (y)
Thank you!!

not long enough
where is Harrapool??? we have done most of Scotland never heard of it

But get Applecross on your list then Gairloch and find the money for ferry out to the western isles (outer Hebrides in old money), as Carol says then if during August try and do the fringe , it is amazing, I will try to find a way to get motorhomes allowed on to the meadows, a city park that used to home some temporary events, would make a great temporary site

I am looking at Norway next year and really hope it is not too similar to western Scotland :)

If you are fit then definitely stop at Isle Of Cumbrae. Its only 10.5 miles around, either take your bikes or hire them. Lovely scenery and ferry fares only £36.50 return. Only one town..Millport. Not many shops though there is an offsales, a few hotels and takeaways. :)

Since 2009 with motorhomes several caravans then tents before that.
We can't wait to get back to the outer Hebrides again.
We did the hopscotch 12 reverse.
Starting off at Oban finishing at Mallaig . We managed to find some lovely wilding spots even in our previous mh.
We're looking forward to going up in our new PVC.

We only had 15 days not enough time . Next time we shan't go to as many islands but explore more whilst on each one.

I live here............ and I can't go South fast enough!
Using the words fast and South in the same sentence????

We love travelling north as the traffic gets less with each mile and it's always a pleasant journey. We miss living in the south for the weather but don't miss the traffic at all and if you get good weather in Scotland, which we often do, it is heaven on earth.

Sorry for highjacking your post Techno

The weather was so so so BAD
That I will not be returning to the Hebredes
But it was not just the weather
The area was dare I say desolate sorry but that is my personnel view
People say it would have been better in the sunshine
Yes we did have a couple at the most days of sunshine
But no
The views on the way up Scotlad were beautiful so would visit mainland again
Stayed at a lovely campsite outside Falkirk on the road to Mallaige think it was called Linnit (if you have a asci Card it's cheaper)

Anyway that is my individual view of the Hebredes.

We had fantastic weather not one midge. Maybe that's why it was so special. A link to our album. The sun does make a difference. I'm sure. Broken Link Removed

Visiting this damp, cold windy country is one thing....... living here full time is another ;)
