Hi i have a 2000 year ducato based autotrail cheiftan tag axle.my question is will it be ok to carry a 125 motorcycle on a rack on the back.the bike weighs 100kilo and the rack is 19kilo.
Im 90 kilo and when i jump and down on the tow hitch there seems very little if any rear suspension movement. Dont know the axle limitations but the weight limit is 4500k and in runnung order wthout the bike we are around the 4000k mark. Many thanks in advance.

AXle limit will be on the plate in engine bay..
First thing you need do is go weight the van and especially the rear axle as it is now and with the van loaded..
Only then will you know what LEGAL spare weight you can add...

Bike and rack at 120kg will easily add about 150kg to the rear axle as the weight on the rear will have a cantilever effect and weight more but lighten the front slightly..

Start simple. Check the down weight of the tow bar, some are as low as 60kgs. Very very few are as much as 100 kgs. This could be your first hurdle. If that is ok, then as above.

Not long enough, but a little common sense helps..........
As stated above 150kg added with bike and rack. We have one fitted ( NOT on a towbar - proper rack ) and we have 40kg spare after loading up for a trip ( full fuel, 20ish lts of water, food, cloths etc and the wife........ ) Would not be without the scooter ( Honda PCX ) as makes MH'ing more fun.

how would that be done, is there a plate on tb that shows it ?
good point i can see the tb is fairly substtantial but there is nothing to tell me the ball weight,my vito van is capable of 100 kilo tongue weight and thats a much smaller towbar set up.Any tag axle owners out there.i see smaller mh with single axle doing the bike carrying thing.

Hi i went back to the weighbridge today the rear axle load capacity is 3000k according to the plate on the cab ,mine without the rack and bike but loaded except for clothes and food weighs 2220k so i have 780 kilo to play with, seems to me im safe to go.Total weight was 3740k on the bridge ,max allowed 4500k
front axle according to plate is 1850k . i think im good to go had alook at the towbracket it has plates which spread the load to the chassis over about a 40cm span.looks pretty solid to me.
thanks for the input everyone.

I just had a look at my tow bar and there is a manufactures plate stating down weight to be 100kgs. I just bought a second hand scooter rack with the intention of getting a 50cc moped and without thinking of checking any weights first !
Am I correct then in thinking the rack and scooter must weigh less than 100kgs ? Is it guidance that can be exceeded slightly or will I be in trouble if it`s checked ?

My guess is over that weight something at break either on a bumpy road or over time.
