At last I have learned how to boil eggs and save gas . Put required number of eggs into a pan with cold water put a lid on and bring to boil . As soon as you have a rolling boil turn the gas off and remove the pan from heat . Leave for 3 minutes if you like a runny yolk and soft white , 4 minutes for runny yolk and almost setting white ,5 minutes for soft yolk and set white which is how I like it .
For hardboiled eggs leave for 15 minutes . This applies for large size eggs . Pop the eggs into cold water to stop further cooking . We use this method on the boat because we do not like the galley to get too hot in a hot climate and to save gas . I think the eggs taste better when cooked this way as well .

Same methods for pasta and rice.

Just make sure with rice that it's piping hot when eaten, or quickly chilled with cold water for a salad.

Was there another method. What did you do before :)

I'm assuming, keeping the gas on for the three minutes or so while the eggs cook. It's not necessary but it seems that's how most people do it.

I always steam my rice. Bring to boil and boil for about 5 minutes, stir & put lid back on and leave to steam for at least 20 minutes but can be left up to 40 minutes and still OK. Don't know if you can leave it longer.

Don't really do pasta very often but presume wouldn't need as long to steam.
