Hi there. We need advice?

We are looking to buy a secondhand 4 berth Motorhome preferably with the double bed above the cab. Can anyone advise us on the ones with the best all round build quality and reliability of the different manufactures. Could we get such a vehicle for under ?15,000?
We used to have a VW caravanette but we found it very small and limited with no shower or toilet.
Any advise would be very much appreciated.

hi Cleo and Link Removedto the FUN.

we have a swift kontiki, largish rear U shaped lounge and an overcab bed.
the overcab is a bit on the small size for two so we use the two main 6ft U shape lounge seats as two singles or made up can be a very large double.
for us everything is in the right place and its the best layout we have found.

ours is a 2001, 2.8 diesel, 3.85 tonnes but was considerably more your budget but a few years older and you should find something. (sorry if that sounds pompous)

age isnt really an issue but condition is.
most motorhomes are only used for a few weeks/months a year so the milage should be pretty low compered to say, a car, of the same age.
look at the fixtures and fittings....do they look tatty/uncared for ? if so the chances the previous owner hasnt been to fussed about maintainance of the mechanical bits either.
look for staining on the roof/wall joints and around the windows...water staining usually equals leaks/damp...can be expensive to fix, if at all.

mostly, dont be put off......keep looking as something will turn up.

We're happy with our Elddis Autoquest 100, which meets the requirement of a 4 berth with an overcab bed - but it might not suit everyone.

Sound advice from all previous posters, to which I would add make a list of your essential requirements and be critical of what meets them or not.

Hope you find something soon - and enjoy it for years to come.

We have an old G reg which you can see in our avatar, it runs well and does us fine and cost nowhere near 15k. It had low mileage when we bought it, so you dont need to buy newish to have a decent home. Its spacious too. Jim has a special checklist which is also useful when looking to purchase motorhomes - might be worth investing in this.

It is also a good time to buy and there are some bargains to be had on ebay, but do be very careful. Dont forget to check seams and ceilings for any signs of damps or leaks.

Have a look at the motorhome shows coming up, theres Newark in March and Peterborough in April, well worth using these to both talk to owners and to see the vast ranges available in one location

Hi - we bought a 1999 Lunar Roadstar - 4 berth with L shaped lounge (sleeps 2 and 2 birth over cab) last yr for £14K

Although interior had done some miles and was faded owing to not being protected from daylight when not in use - (interior therefore a little less than brand new and also had been used for lots of short trips we think) it had low mileage for 10 yr old vehicle. Mechanically in tip top though. Atlhough a lot of people wouldnt agree with going for something which isnt absolutely brilliantly new inside, we are not so worried about interior as long as mechanically sound to be honest - obviously good to have both if you have the dosh. Depends what your priorities are really.

We are very pleased with it but still getting to grips with how things work as have only done overnighters in the main.

We're so new to this we haven't bought a motorhome yet, but your Bessacar is high on our list already. Bessacar and AutoTrail seem very well built.
Hope you don't mind me asking but does your 2.3 cope well with towing the car/trailer or would you go for a bigger engine next time - and what was it that swung it for the Bessacar?

Other than a bed over cab are there any other things you require or prefer.

For example:
a U shaped lounge
2 double beds or 1 double 2 bunks etc

We had a Swift 590 and now have a Elnagh Baron. Two completely different layouts but both very good vehicles.

I'd first decide on the layout you want and then look at what fits that.

EX Vw ambulance - needing upgrading!

Hi - we are also looking to upgrade from a VW van we had to a 4 berth.. We were looking at a rollerteam but not to fussy about layout etc. More interested in fuel efficiency and reliability as didnt have this with our 'Gunther'.... What are the pros and cons of different layouts. Is it difficult to sleep in cab when lashing?? We have a dog and looking at 4 berth.... There are so many different makes and models, it gets confusing. Looking at spending around 15 k...Is 1.9 Fiat ducato ok to drive?
